Welcome New Opera North Tosca Production

On the musical side the orchestral playing under Jonathan Santagada was quite outstanding. His tempi and modulation of the orchestral forces, and support for his singers, could hardly be better.

La scala di seta (Royal Opera House) Rossini's 'Silken Ladder' showcases the Jette Parker Young Artists in the Linbury Studio

There are opportunities aplenty at the moment to catch rare Rossinis, with WNO taking Mosè in Egitto and Guillaume Tell on the road and a production of the latter looming at Covent Garden. While awaiting that highlight of the 2015 season, the Royal Opera House gave its Young Artists a chance to please audiences with a Linbury staging of one of the early one-acters, La scala di seta (The Silken Ladder).

Don Giovanni, Corsini Gardens, Florence: 'The central couple were dream casting'

If your aristocratic family has been top of the tree in Italy for the past six hundred years, furnishing a long string of ministers of state, cardinals, and even a pope, and if you also own the most beautiful private garden in Florence, how do you cap it all? The solution which Prince Filippo and Princess Giorgiana Corsini have hit on is to found a new arts festival, with opera at its core.

Welcome New Opera North Tosca Production has an Outstanding Singer in the Title Role

Opera North celebrated its thirtieth anniversary with a reprise of an earlier Christopher Alden production of Tosca whose set by Charles Edwards looked like the junk outhouse of a church with its sacristy, full of clutter including a statue of the Madonna, a confessional, assorted chairs and tea-making equipment as well as Cavaradossi’s paint gear. It was stark and perhaps meant to outline the brutality of the story. Alden seemed not merely content to outline that brutality, but to underline it in the décor, if I could call it that. This extended to the adjacent office of the sacristan who smoked his day away watching TV or selling lottery tickets throughout all three acts without an outward glance of the rape and murder going on outside his window!
