Philip Glass is an American music superstar, the most famous minimalist composer in the world. His music is well known to movie buffs (The Illusionist, The Truman Show, Watchmen) and rock music fans (he worked with Mick Jagger and Aphex Twin, influenced the style of Brian Eno and David Bowie, and later wrote symphonies on the themes their songs), but Glass is also the author of almost three dozen operas. He brought the sound drive of rock music into the opera performance, returned it to its monumental spectacle and scale. It was Satyagraha in Yekaterinburg that became Glass's first opera staged in Russia.

The text of "Satyagraha" is written in Sanskrit, and the title is translated as "perseverance in truth": this is how Mahatma Gandhi, a fighter for the independence of India, called his tactics of non-violent resistance to the colonialists at the end of the 19th century. Satyagraha does not have a consistent plot, which is usual for an opera performance; it develops as a series of impressions and symbolic episodes associated with the personality of Gandhi. Each of the three acts is dedicated to a historical figure who embodied the idea of ​​Satyagraha - Leo Tolstoy, Rabindranath Tagore, Martin Luther King.

Director Tadeusz Strassberger placed the action in a conditional, almost fabulous space and did not divide the theater into a stage and a hall, surrounding the audience with a choir marching along the stalls. His "Satyagraha" is an opera-meditation, where the viewer is invited to forget everyday troubles and habitual ideas about opera music and follow the endlessly repeating musical figures. In a series of these repetitions, the smallest rhythmic or harmonic shift becomes a big event, and after three hours there is a feeling that the surrounding world and the viewer himself have become a little different.

Его музыку хорошо знают любители кино («Иллюзионист», «Шоу Трумана», «Хранители») и поклонники рок-музыки (он работал с Миком Джаггером и Aphex Twin, повлиял на стиль Брайана Ино и Дэвида Боуи, а позже написал симфонии на темы их песен), однако Гласс — еще и автор почти трех десятков опер. В оперный спектакль он внес звуковой драйв рок-музыки, вернул ему монументальную зрелищность и масштаб. Именно «Сатьяграха» в Екатеринбурге стала первой оперой Гласса, поставленной в России.

Текст «Сатьяграхи» написан на санскрите, а название переводится как «упорство в истине»: так Махатма Ганди, борец за независимость Индии, назвал в конце XIX века свою тактику ненасильственного сопротивления колонизаторам. В «Сатьяграхе» отсутствует привычный для оперного спектакля последовательный сюжет, она развивается как череда впечатлений и символических эпизодов, связанных с личностью Ганди. Каждый из трех актов посвящен исторической фигуре, воплотившей идею сатьяграхи — Льву Толстому, Рабиндранату Тагору, Мартину Лютеру Кингу.

Режиссер Тадеуш Штрассбергер поместил действие в условное, почти сказочное пространство и не стал разделять театр на сцену и зал, окружив зрителей шествующим по партеру хором. Его «Сатьяграха» — опера-медитация, где зрителю предлагается забыть бытовые неурядицы и привычные представления об оперной музыке и следовать за бесконечно повторяющимися музыкальными фигурами. В череде этих повторений самый малый ритмический или гармонический сдвиг становятся большим событием, и спустя три часа возникает ощущение, что окружающий мир и сам зритель стали немного другими.
