Baltimore, 1962. The Corny Collins Show is the center of Tracy's world. Every day the “Nicest Kids in Town” present the latest dance steps here. To be there once is Tracy's dream. But it seems too fat and unadjusted for that. When she got to know the cool dance steps of the black classmates while in detention , her chance came. On the other hand, their black friends don't get a chance , because they are not even allowed to appear on the TV show because of the prevailing racial segregation. But Tracy is not satisfied with that. The cult musical is a brilliant statement against any form of discrimination.


black or black?
With the cast of the Motormouth community, we decided to use lower case letters when it comes to racial segregation in America in the 1960s. "Hairspray" is set in 1962 in the USA. Racial segregation still existed by law in the southern states. The so-called “One-Drop-Rule” defined everyone who had a black African ancestor as “black”. The musical addresses this “legalized” racism. The capitalized “black” that is used by many initiatives today, on the other hand, does not refer to an ethnic group, but rather stands for “a bond through similar experiences of racism” (Amnesty International). We assume that the audience will carry over the musical's appeal for respectful interaction with one another into today and relate it to everyone.
