Das Programm des 3. Sinfoniekonzertes vereint sehr unterschiedliche Werke, die jeweils in den letzten Lebensjahren der Komponisten entstanden sind. Parsifal, der reine Tor, gewissermaßen der Antipode zum Nihilisten Faust, diente in der Rezeptionsgeschichte immer wieder als Projektionsfläche unterschiedlicher Deutungen. Dem Vorspiel zu Wagners Bühnenweihfestspiel, welches Hartmut Haenchen 2016 und 2017 in Bayreuth geleitet hat, folgen »Vier letzte Lieder« von Strauss, nostalgisch und von Todesahnung geprägt, und Schostakowitschs letzte Sinfonie, die neben der Ouvertüre zu Rossinis letzter Oper »Wilhelm Tell« Wagnersche Motive reflektiert. Der Komponist wollte mit diesem Werk allerdings keinen Schlusspunkt setzen, sondern den Blick in die Zukunft richten.

The program of the 3rd symphony concert brings together very different works that were written in the last years of the composer's life. Parsifal, the pure fool, to a certain extent the antipode to the nihilist Faust, has repeatedly served as a projection screen for different interpretations throughout the history of reception. The prelude to Wagner's stage festival play, which Hartmut Haenchen conducted in Bayreuth in 2016 and 2017, is followed by Strauss's "Four Last Songs", nostalgic and marked by a premonition of death, and Shostakovich's last symphony, which, alongside the overture to Rossini's last opera "Wilhelm Tell", is Wagnerian motives reflected. However, the composer did not want to end the work with this work, but rather to look to the future.
