Although Gustav Mahler's Sixth Symphony was written during a period of family happiness and great success as the director of the Vienna Opera, it is the darkest of his symphonies. His wife Alma remembered the day Gustav Mahler played her the Sixth on the piano for the first time: “No work flowed from his heart as directly as this one. We both cried then. That's how deeply we felt this music and what it foreshadowed. The sixthis his most personal work and a prophetic one at that". For Mahler, the legendary hammer blows in the finale symbolized those fatalistic strokes of fate that “fell” the imaginary hero of his symphony. They seem like a ghostly premonition of his own fate: in 1907, just one year after the premiere, the death of his older daughter Maria Anna plunged him into a serious crisis and he was diagnosed with heart disease, from which he was to die four years later. In his Sixth SymphonyMahler impressively describes the inevitability of fate and the brutality of the reality of life to which he felt exposed throughout his life. The monumental work is heard in this symphony concert under the direction of Nicola Luisotti, who has been closely associated with the Staatsoper Stuttgart since his debut in 2001 and shaped the San Francisco Opera for several years as music director.

Obwohl Gustav Mahlers Sechste Sinfonie in einer Zeit familiären Glücks und großer Erfolge als Wiener Operndirektor entstand, ist sie die düsterste unter seinen Sinfonien. Seine Frau Alma erinnerte sich an jenen Tag, an dem Gustav Mahler ihr die Sechste erstmals am Klavier vorspielte: „Kein Werk ist ihm so unmittelbar aus dem Herzen geflossen wie dieses. Wir weinten damals beide. So tief fühlten wir diese Musik und was sie vorahnend verriet. Die Sechste ist sein allerpersönlichstes Werk und ein prophetisches obendrein“. Die legendären Hammerschläge im Finale symbolisierten für Mahler jene fatalistischen Schicksalsschläge, die den imaginären Helden seiner Sinfonie „fällen“. Sie wirken wie eine gespenstische Vorahnung seines eigenen Schicksals: 1907, nur ein Jahr nach der Uraufführung, ließ ihn der Tod seiner älteren Tochter Maria Anna in eine schwere Krise stürzen und er erhielt die Diagnose einer Herzkrankheit, an der er vier Jahre später sterben sollte. In seiner Sechsten Sinfonie beschreibt Mahler eindrücklich die Unausweichlichkeit des Schicksals und die Brutalität der Lebenswirklichkeit, der er sich zeitlebens ausgeliefert sah. Das monumental besetzte Werk erklingt in diesem Sinfoniekonzert unter der Leitung von Nicola Luisotti, der seit seinem Debüt im Jahr 2001 eng mit der Staatsoper Stuttgart verbunden ist und mehrere Jahre als Musikdirektor die San Francisco Opera prägte.
