Als »Aida« 1871 in Kairo zur Uraufführung kam, erreichten den abwesenden Komponisten Jubelstürme, die bereits ahnen ließen: »Aida« wird Giuseppe Verdis größter Erfolg – tatsächlich ist sie bis heute neben »La traviata« seine meistgespielte Oper. Erzählt wird die Geschichte Aidas, die am Hof des ägyptischen Königs als Sklavin gehalten wird. Niemand weiß, dass es sich bei ihr um die äthiopische Prinzessin und Tochter des Königs Amonasro handelt. Umso politischer wird ihre heimliche Liebe zu Radamès, der als Feldherr den Krieg gegen Äthiopien anführen soll. Der Konflikt schärft sich insofern noch, als dass auch Amneris, die Tochter des ägyptischen Pharaos, Gefühle für Radamès hat und bereits vermutet, dass die Sklavin ihre Konkurrentin ist…
 

Es entspinnt sich eine dramatische Geschichte um Liebe, Eifersucht, Loyalität und Verrat vor dem Hintergrund eines kriegerischen und machtbesessenen Staatsapparats, die Verdi meisterhaft mit monumentalen Chören, emotionalen Arien und ausgefeilten Stimmungsbildern in Musik gesetzt hat.

 

Regie führt Adriana Altaras, die in Braunschweig zuletzt in der Spielzeit 2017/2018 »Elektra« von Richard Strauss im Großen Haus inszeniert hat. Die Musikalische Leitung übernimmt Generalmusikdirektor Srba Dinić, das Bühnenbild Christoph Schubiger und die Kostüme die mehrfach ausgezeichnete Kostüm- und Bühnenbildnerin Yashi.

If someone had told me two years ago that you were going to write an opera for Cairo, I would have thought them crazy, but now I see that I am the crazy one.« In 1870 Giuseppe Verdi received an offer from the Egyptian viceroy to write a work to compose for the opening of the Suez Canal and the new opera in Cairo. Verdi accepted the commission, especially since the subject was Egyptian, giving him the opportunity to give Italian opera an “oriental exoticism” popular with audiences at the time. However, postponements meant that the curtain of the opera house first rose for another opera by Verdi (»Rigoletto«) and the Suez Canal also had to be opened without »Aida«. But when it finally had its world premiere in Cairo in 1871, the absent composer was greeted with thunderous jubilation, which already indicated that »Aida« would be Verdi's greatest success – in fact, it is still the composer's most-performed opera to this day.

 

It tells the story of Aida, who is kept as a slave at the Egyptian king's court. No one knows that she is the Ethiopian princess and daughter of King Amonasro. Her secret love for Radamès, who is to lead the war against Ethiopia as general, becomes all the more political. The conflict is exacerbated by the fact that Amneris, the daughter of the Egyptian pharaoh, also has feelings for Radamès and already suspects that the slave is her competitor...

 

A dramatic story unfolds about love, jealousy, loyalty and betrayal against the background of a warlike and power-obsessed state apparatus, which Verdi masterfully set to music with monumental choirs, emotional arias and sophisticated mood pictures.

 

Adriana Altaras, who most recently staged Richard Strauss' Elektra in the Great House, will return to the Staatstheater Braunschweig for the production of the »Open Air« classic par excellence. General music director Srba Dinić is in charge of the music, Christoph Schubiger is responsible for the stage design and Yashi, the award-winning costume and stage designer, is responsible for the costumes.
