What are we looking for in the theater – distraction or edification? Since the beginning of opera history, theater people, intellectuals and audiences have been arguing about what is more important, whether the need for entertainment and the need for education are mutually exclusive, or how the two can possibly be combined. In 1911, Richard Strauss made an extremely original, not to say provocative, contribution to the debate with his opera Ariadne auf Naxos, sending the frivolous Commedia dell'Arte troupe around Zerbinetta and the opera ensemble around the tragic heroine Ariadne into the race at the same time. No matter how much the composer suffers and music teachers and dance masters get angry! It is all the more astonishing how impressively the two theater worlds can intertwine...
The British theater and opera director James Bonas has a lot of experience with unusual and grotesque material and, in his first work for a German opera house, charges this unique music-theatrical experimental arrangement with real emotionality.

Was suchen wir im Theater – Zerstreuung oder Erbauung? Seit Beginn der Operngeschichte streiten Theaterleute, Intellektuelle und Publikum darüber, was höher zu bewerten sei, ob sich Unterhaltungsbedürfnis und Bildungsanspruch ausschließen oder wie sich beides möglicherweise verbinden ließe. Einen ausgesprochen originellen, um nicht zu sagen provokanten Beitrag zur Debatte lieferte 1911 Richard Strauss mit seiner Oper Ariadne auf Naxos und schickt die frivole Commedia dell’Arte-Truppe um Zerbinetta und das Opernensemble um die tragische Heldin Ariadne zugleich ins Rennen. Da mag der Komponist noch so leiden und sich Musiklehrer und Tanzmeister echauffieren! Umso erstaunlicher, wie beeindruckend die beiden Theaterwelten ineinander greifen können …
Der britische Theater- und Opernregisseur James Bonas hat viel Erfahrung mit ungewöhnlichen und grotesken Stoffen und lädt in seiner ersten Arbeit für ein deutsches Opernhaus diese einzigartige musiktheatrale Versuchsanordnung mit echter Emotionalität auf.
