Ariodante
Romantic hero before Romanticism, a chivalrous character who elevates his poetic singing to fidelity and honor in the misty Edinburgh of the Scottish Middle Ages; companion of Orlando of Ariosto, that quixotic Roldán, that ennobles with the voice that gave Händel the loneliness and the rewarded loyalty to him. The triumph of light - which is the soul - over night and darkness - which is envy and betrayal - is Ariodante. Handel's baroque opera returns to the Main Hall of the Arts after a fourteen-year absence. If in 2008 it was Orlando, this season is the turn of Ariodante, also rescued from cancellations as a result of COVID-19. It is one of the most beautiful operas of the German composer and a title highly prized by music lovers. London stage director Richard Jones reviews this legendary Scottish story in an imaginative production that leaves no viewer indifferent. It was successfully premiered at the Festival d'Ais de Provence in 2014, directed musically by harpsichordist and master Andrea Marcon, who relives this experience in Les Arts. A specialist in baroque repertoire, Marcon has an abundant discography, and his artistic career has been recognized with numerous awards, including Campoamor for best director for Ariodante. The prestigious Australian countertenor David Hansen debuts in The Arts as Prince Ariodante, next to the Polinesso of reference of the last years, Christophe Dumaux. They are accompanied by prominent voices in this repertoire, such as Lucca Tittoto, Jane Archibald, David Portillo and Sandrine Piau.
