Mahagonny, die Netzestadt, wurde von den »Unternehmern« Leokadja Begbick, Fatty (der »Prokurist«) und ­Dreieinigkeitsmoses gegründet, um den Menschen durch eine Angebotsfülle von Genussmöglichkeiten ihr Geld ­abzunehmen. Nach Mahagonny kommen auch die vier Holzfäller Jim Mahoney, Jack O’Brian, Sparbüchsen-Bill und Alaskawolf-Joe. Mit ihrem durch harte Arbeit und ein ­entbehrungsreiches Leben in Alaska errungenen Geld ­wollen sie nun ihr Leben genießen. Jim kauft sich die ­Prostituierte Jenny, stört sich aber an den vielen Verboten, die in der Stadt gelten. Nachdem ein Hurrikan die Stadt überraschend verschont, werden auf Jims Betreiben hin alle ­Regeln aufgehoben; man darf nun alles tun, solange man es ­bezahlen kann. Jack frisst sich tot und Joe wird von Dreieinigkeitsmoses in einem Boxkampf getötet. Als Jim, der sein ganzes Geld auf Joe gesetzt hatte, seinen Whiskey nicht ­bezahlen kann, wird er zum Tode verurteilt und ­hingerichtet. Jenny wechselt zu Bill. Und doch ist diese nur scheinbar perfekte Spaß-Gesellschaft dem Untergang geweiht.

Bertolt Brecht schuf mit dieser Oper eine Parabel auf die moderne Gesellschaft, die auch nach 90 Jahren nichts von ihrer Aktualität eingebüßt hat. Dazu komponierte Kurt Weill eine reiche Musik mit Hits wie in der »Dreigroschenoper«. So besingt beispielsweise Jenny den »Moon of ­Alabama« und bemerkt später treffend: »Denn wie man sich bettet, so liegt man.«

Mahagonny, the Netzestadt, was founded by the "entrepreneurs" Leokadja Begbick, Fatty (the "authorized officer") and Dreieinigkeitsmoses in order to take people's money from a wealth of pleasure opportunities. Also coming to Mahagonny are the four lumberjacks Jim Mahoney, Jack O'Brian, Piggy Bank Bill and Alaskan Wolf Joe. With the money they earned through hard work and a life of hardship in Alaska, they now want to enjoy life. Jim buys the prostitute Jenny, but is bothered by the many bans that apply in the city. After a hurricane surprisingly spares the town, all rules are repealed at Jim's instigation; you can now do anything as long as you can pay for it. Jack eats himself to death and Joe is killed by Trinity Moses in a boxing match. as Jim, who bet all his money on Joe cannot pay for his whiskey, he is sentenced to death and executed. Jenny switches to Bill. And yet this seemingly perfect fun society is doomed.

With this opera, Bertolt Brecht created a parable of modern society that has lost none of its topicality even after 90 years. In addition, Kurt Weill composed rich music with hits like in the »The Threepenny Opera«. For example, Jenny sings about the »Moon of Alabama« and later aptly remarks: »As you make your bed, so you lie down.
