This season offers the opportunity to discover two facets of the work of Kurt Weill, undoubtedly one of the most important composers of the 20th century. The first is the Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny , Weill's second collaboration with Bertolt Brecht. The opera about a city where money, indulgence and crime reign supreme before everything bursts into flames reflects the late Weimar Republic. However, given the current social upheavals, it has lost none of its relevance. Director Ivo van Hove makes this clear in his still red-hot production from 2019, which uses green screen and video to question our relationship with social media. For the co-production with the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, the Théâtres de la Ville once again welcome the Orchester de Chambre du Luxembourg under the musical direction of Duncan Ward.

Diese Spielzeit bietet die Gelegenheit gleich zwei Facetten des Schaffens von Kurt Weill, zweifellos einem der bedeutendsten Komponisten des 20 Jahrhunderts, zu entdecken. Den Auftakt macht Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, Weills zweite Zusammenarbeit mit Bertolt Brecht. Die Oper über eine Stadt, in der Geld, Genuss und Kriminalität regieren, bevor alles in Flammen aufgeht, spiegelt die späte Weimarer Republik wider. Von ihrer Relevanz hat sie angesichts der aktuellen sozialen Verwerfungen allerdings nichts verloren. Dies verdeutlicht Regisseur Ivo van Hove in seiner immer noch brandaktuellen Inszenierung von 2019, die mit Greenscreen und Video arbeitet, um unser Verhältnis zu den sozialen Medien zu befragen. Für die Koproduktion mit dem Festival d’Aix-en-Provence begrüßen die Théâtres de la Ville erneut das Orchestre de Chambre du Luxembourg unter der musikalischen Leitung von Duncan Ward.
