Bach a composé en 1734 à Leipzig son Oratorio de Noël constitué de six cantates, pour les trois jours de fête de Noël liés à la naissance du Christ, et pour les trois cérémonies du début d’année : Circoncision du Christ, Premier Dimanche et Épiphanie. Avec ces six cantates brillantes, emplies de vie et d’enthousiasme, cette œuvre magnifie l’alternance des grands chœurs typiques de l’art choral de Bach, et des airs solistes racontant l’histoire émouvante et merveilleuse de la Nativité puis de la reconnaissance de la divinité du Christ par les bergers et les Rois Mages.

La première cantate décrit ainsi la naissance de Jésus, la seconde l’Annonciation, la troisième l’Adoration des bergers, la quatrième le Nom de Jésus, la cinquième et la sixième le récit des Trois Rois Mages. Elles furent intégralement données à l’église Saint-Nicolas de Leipzig pour leur création, et les cantates 1, 2, 4 et 6 le furent également à l’église Saint-Thomas : Bach les interprétait le matin dans l’une et l’après-midi dans l’autre, pour le plaisir d’un maximum de fidèles.

Rassemblant un orchestre toujours animé et qui soutient le discours musical, armé de tambours et trompettes pour les passages glorieux et la joie des fidèles, Bach dédie aux solistes certains de ses plus beaux arias.

In 1734 in Leipzig, Bach composed his Christmas Oratorio, consisting of six cantatas, for the Christmas season. Full of life and enthusiasm, this work magnifies the alternation of the great choruses typical of Bach's choral art, and the solo arias telling the moving and marvellous story of the Nativity and the recognition of Christ's divinity by the shepherds and the three kings.

Bringing together an orchestra that is always lively and supportive of the musical discourse, armed with drums and trumpets for the glorious passages and the joy of the faithful, Bach dedicates some of his most beautiful arias to the soloists, while the sumptuous choruses punctuate each cantata with extraordinary glory!

Valentin Tournet directs the choir and orchestra of the Chapelle Harmonique, which is well accustomed to the Royal Chapel!
