An annual fixture in Northern Ireland’s musical calendar, BBC Radio 3 is delighted to present 4 Summer Invitation Concerts with the Ulster Orchestra. Continuing a tradition which began in 1985, all of the concerts will take place in the Victorian splendour of the Ulster Hall, encompassing rarely heard works, music by women composers and symphonic classics.

The Season will also shine the spotlight on top talent: most notably the Belfast pianist Michael McHale in his 40th birthday year and BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, the Colombian cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia. Conductor Angus Webster also returns, following his debut with the Orchestra last Summer, along with the Orchestra’s Honorary Principal Guest Conductor, Jac van Steen.
This, the 2nd of the 4 programmes, showcases the work of 2 female contemporaries: the Finnish composer Ida Moberg and Ireland’s own Ina Boyle. Also in the programme a work by Englishman David Matthews – his Dark Pastorale (2010), based on the surviving fragment of the slow movement from Vaughan Williams' Cello Concerto – and works by Schubert and Sibelius with enduring appeal.
