“ Shakespeare, falling on me unexpectedly, struck me down. Its flash, opening the sky of art to me with a sublime crash, illuminated its most distant depths for me. I recognized the real greatness, the real beauty, the real dramatic truth. »

The discovery of Shakespeare's work was love at first sight for Berlioz and would be a fruitful source of inspiration: overtures to The Tempest and King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, Tristia, and among his last works, the opera- comic Béatrice et Bénédict . Berlioz had long had in mind the idea of ​​composing a work based on Shakespeare's comedy Much Ado About Nothing , but the opportunity to carry out this project did not materialize until 1858, when the director of the Baden Festival in Germany , where Berlioz went regularly, commissioned an opera from him which was to be premiered successfully in 1862. Berlioz himself wrote the libretto of his score, which he considered " difficult to perform well " and one "ofof the most vivid and most original " that he has produced. He tightens the plot on the characters of Béatrice, niece of the governor of Messina and Bénédict, a Sicilian officer, who, too busy hating each other cordially and engaging in tasty witticisms, forget to note the obvious: They are made for each other ! There begins the joyful schemes of their loved ones to unite them... for better and for worse.

This " whim written with the tip of a needle " in Berlioz's words will be carried by the Orchester philharmonique de Strasbourg under the direction of the immense Berliozian conductor John Nelson, who for one evening will transport us to the heights of Messina, Sicily.

La découverte de l’œuvre de Shakespeare est pour Berlioz un véritable coup de foudre et sera une source d’inspiration féconde : ouvertures de La Tempête et du Roi Lear, Roméo et Juliette, Tristia, et parmi ses dernières œuvres, l’opéra-comique Béatrice et Bénédict. Berlioz a depuis longtemps en tête l’idée de composer une oeuvre d’après la comédie Much Ado About Nothing de Shakespeare, mais l’occasion de réaliser ce projet ne se concrétise qu’en 1858, quand le directeur du festival de Bade en Allemagne, où Berlioz se rend régulièrement, lui passe commande d’un opéra qui sera créé avec succès en 1862. Berlioz écrit lui-même le livret de sa partition, qu’il juge « difficile à bien exécuter » et l’une « des plus vives et des plus originales » qu’il ait produites. Il resserre l’intrigue sur les personnages de Béatrice, nièce du gouverneur de Messine et Bénédict, officier sicilien, lesquels, trop occupés à se détester cordialement et à se livrer à de savoureuses joutes d’esprit, en oublient de constater l’évidence : ils sont faits l’un pour l’autre ! Là commencent les joyeuses manigances de leurs proches pour les unir… pour le meilleur et pour le pire.

Ce « caprice écrit avec la pointe d’une aiguille » selon les termes de Berlioz sera porté par l’Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg placé sous la direction de l’immense chef berliozien John Nelson, qui le temps d’une soirée nous transportera sur les hauteurs de Messine, en Sicile.
