"The aim that good music must have is to move," wrote Claudio Monteverdi in the preface to his Eighth Book of Madrigals. His preferred means of doing this? The dramatic contrast, "because I know that it is the opposites that move our minds to a great extent". The best example of this emotionally charged approach, which overwhelmed many sober contemporaries, is Monteverdi's "Vespro della Beata Vergine". Because the overall architecture of this Marian Vespers, which is as complex as it is boldly thought out, offers a musical diversity that was unimagined at the time with constantly changing instrumentations and timbres – and despite all the well-calculated contrasts, results in an intentional, homogeneous whole. In addition to the usual Vespers components such as psalms, antiphons and hymns, Monteverdi also added so-called "Concerti", which are unmistakably oriented towards contemporary secular vocal music. They in particular achieve a passionate, almost sensual intensity that was something completely new in sacred music at the time. Philippe Herreweghe, who was encouraged as a student by pioneers of historical performance practice such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt, is a guest at the Philharmonie Berlin with Monteverdi's "Vespro della Beata Vergine" - together with the Collegium Vocale Gent, which he founded and which is still active today associated with his name, as a guarantee for excellent interpretations: on old instruments and in a lean, transparent choir. which was something completely new in sacred music at the time.
