the story
So do they all , or L'École des amants (in French in the text) is a variant on the theme of lovers put to the test. In 18th century Naples, two young men sure of the fidelity of the two sisters to whom they are betrothed, place a bet with one of their bachelor friends who does not give a lot of female fidelity. Thus, in a role-playing game where each court the other's fiancée, Don Alfonso's prediction seems to come true... Wanted by Mozart, this contemporary scenario on an ordinary subject has earned the work a century of purgatory before entering the great repertoire. Così is not a succession of tunes but a continuous soundtrack tuned to the clarity of Da Ponte's libretto. This is perhaps the whole “sublimity” of the work as Reynaldo Hahn called it. Sublimity, key word for a masterpiece.
