Of the three librettos written by Lorenzo da Ponte for Mozart, that of Cosi fan tutte is the only one whose subject is an original work. The Marriage of Figaro is inspired by the play by Beaumarchais, while Don Giovanni is one of the many avatars of an age-old myth. This work is inhabited by the spirit of the Enlightenment and recalls the comedies of Molière and Marivaux with their disguises, pretenses, insolent servants and duped characters. Despised in the 19th century, Cosi was only rediscovered and appreciated at its fair value in the middle of the 20th century . Since then, this opera has never left the repertoire.

Des trois livrets écrits par Lorenzo da Ponte pour Mozart, celui de Cosi fan tutte est le seul dont le sujet est une œuvre originale. Les Noces de Figaro s’inspire de la pièce de Beaumarchais, quant à Don Giovanni, c’est l’un des nombreux avatars d’un mythe séculaire. Cet ouvrage est habité par l’esprit des Lumières et rappelle les comédies de Molière et de Marivaux avec leurs travestissements, faux-semblants, serviteurs insolents et personnages dupés. Dédaigné au XIXe siècle, Cosi n’est redécouvert et apprécié à sa juste valeur qu’au milieu du XXe. Depuis, cet opéra n’a plus quitté le répertoire.
