Withdrawn into the idyll of his summer residence, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) was deeply impressed by the surrounding nature in his isolated composing cottage: by the sight of the mountains, the smell of the earth, the forest and birds. In deep admiration for nature, Das Lied von der Erde was written in South Tyrol in 1908 , when Mahler's world lay shaken before him. His daughter Maria had died at the age of four, he himself was diagnosed with an incurable heart condition and resigned from his position as director of the Vienna Court Opera after an anti-Semitic press campaign.

During this difficult time, Gustav Mahler enjoyed the collection of poems The Chinese Flute , translations of Chinese poetry thousands of years old, which he set to music in a symphonic song cycle.

The director and choreographer Jean Renshaw and the scenographer Duncan Hayler transfer Das Lied von der Erde into associative movements and images and bring Mahler's inner emotional world to the stage during the creation of his work.

Zurückgezogen in die Idylle seiner Sommerdomizile ließ sich Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) in seinen abgelegenen Komponierhäuschen von der umgebenden Natur tief beeindrucken: vom Anblick der Berge, dem Geruch der Erde, von Wald und Vögeln. In inniger Naturbewunderung entstand so 1908 in Südtirol Das Lied von der Erde, als Mahlers Welt erschüttert vor ihm lag. Seine Tochter Maria war im Alter von vier Jahren verstorben, er selbst erhielt die Diagnose seines unheilbaren Herzleidens und legte nach einer antisemitischen Pressekampagne sein Amt als Direktor der Wiener Hofoper nieder.

In dieser schweren Zeit fand Gustav Mahler Gefallen an der Gedichtesammlung Die chinesische Flöte, Übersetzungen tausende Jahre alter chinesischer Lyrik, die er in einem sinfonischen Liederzyklus vertonte.

Die Regisseurin und Choreografin Jean Renshaw und der Szenograf Duncan Hayler übertragen Das Lied von der Erde in assoziative Bewegungen und Bilder und bringen die innere Gefühlswelt Mahlers während der Entstehung seines Werks auf die Bühne.
