In November 1941, the National Socialists converted the garrison town and fortress Theresienstadt into a concentration camp, which they euphemistically called the “ghetto”. Theresienstadt was intended to serve as an interim storage facility for the Jewish population of the “Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia” before they were transported to the extermination camps, but at the same time as a “model camp” to appease the skepticism of foreign observers. Cultural activities of the inmates were therefore encouraged. The composer Viktor Ullmann was deported to Theresienstadt in 1942 and then acted as "director for musical leisure activities". The renowned Schönberg student created the chamber opera for in 1943 together with the poet and painter Peter Kien
seven singers and thirteen instrumentalists Der Kaiser von Atlantis, originally subtitled Death Thanks .
The emperor of Atlantis rules as a tyrant. He even gives orders to death until death refuses to work and no one dies anymore. Without death, Atlantis falls into chaos. Ultimately, death agrees to perform its function again when the emperor becomes his first victim. Despite rehearsals that had already started, the opera, which obviously made reference to Hitler and the Nazi madness, was never performed. Viktor Ullmann was deported to Auschwitz on October 16, 1944, where he was murdered in the gas chamber.
