For her first production in 2013, reproduced here, Mireille Delunsch had chosen to faithfully and soberly serve Poulenc's purpose by keeping the period clothes in an intimate and poignant scenography. It is the light that then takes a central part of the staging, as if to translate the detachment from reality, at the moment when the Carmelites, caught in the torment of the French Revolution, go towards the ultimate sacrifice. Pour sa première mise en scène en 2013 reprise ici, Mireille Delunsch avait choisi de servir fidèlement et sobrement  le propos de Poulenc en conservant les habits d’époque dans une scénographie intime et poignante. C’est la lumière qui alors prend une part centrale de la mise en scène, comme pour traduire le détachement du réel, au moment où les Carmélites, prises dans le tourment de la Révolution française, vont vers le sacrifice ultime. Mais plus qu’un drame, c’est un hommage à la force collective de l’être féminin qu’incarne cet opéra profondément humain.
