Burnt-out Sir John Falstaff is looking for new sources of money. The aging bon vivant hopes for help from two richly married bourgeois women, which is why he writes them identical love letters. When Mrs. Fluth and her neighbor Mrs. Reich get to grips with him, they swear revenge. An intrigue game begins that in the end hardly lets anyone involved get away unscathed: jealous husbands, worried fathers and false brides in combination with moats, wall umbrellas and laundry baskets create all kinds of comedy situations until finally the complacent knight is punished under the large oak tree in Windsor Park.
In his last opera, Otto Nicolai, who died at the age of 39, combines the intimacy and poetry of German Romanticism with the turbulent comedy and the exceptionally melodic wealth of Italian opera. Since its premiere in Berlin in 1849, "The Merry Women of Windsor" has been one of the most popular German game operas.
