The Swedish première of Strauss’s comic opera ‘The Silent Woman’, a glittering gem that regales us with powerful music, large ensembles and quiet reflection.

A cantankerous old man, a clever woman, an amorous young man and a crafty barber. Strauss’s comedy Die schweigsame Frau contains several familiar ingredients, including subterfuge and intrigue: the youngsters trick their elders and love wins the day.

Old Morosus dislikes loud noises, so he’s less than enamoured of his nephew Henry’s travelling opera company. Now Morosus wants to enjoy quiet, peaceful life with a silent wife. And this proves the key to the young couple’s happiness. Is the quiet and timid Aminta really all she seems? Love and music triumph when Morosus finally pronounces his blessing: ‘How beautiful music is, but even more beautiful when it’s over.’

Richard Strauss’s comic opera from 1935, ‘The Silent Woman’, finally sees its Swedish premiere. A glittering gem that treats us to powerful music, large ensembles and quiet reflection.

Barrie Kosky’s colourful production from the Bavarian State Opera in Munich was premiered in 2010. In Gothenburg it will be conducted by Yoel Gamzou.

The plot, inspired by commedia dell’arte, is virtually identical to that of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, which will be performed on tour in Västra Götaland.

En sur gubbe, en smart kvinna, en förälskad man och en finurlig barberare. Ingredienserna känns igen i Strauss komedi Die schweigsame Frau, liksom intrigen: de unga lurar de äldre och kärleken segrar.

Gamle Morosus är ytterst känslig för höga ljud. Till exempel från den kringresande operatrupp som leds av hans egen brorson Henry. Nu vill Morosus ha lugn och ro tillsammans med en tystlåten fru. Och där finns nyckeln till det unga operaparets lycka. För är den tillbakadragna Aminta verkligen den hon utger sig för att vara? Kärleken och musiken står som segrare, när Morosus till slut ger sin välsignelse: ”Så ljuvlig musiken är. Men ännu skönare när den är över.”

Äntligen blir det Sverigepremiär för Richard Strauss komiska opera från 1935, ”Den tystlåtna kvinnan”. En glittrande pärla med musikalisk kraft, stora ensembler och stillsam eftertanke.

Handlingen är inspirerad av commedia dell’arte och så gott som identisk med den i Donizettis Don Pasquale, som spelas på GöteborgsOperan i mars och på turné i Västra Götaland.
