Like many artists, Busoni too idealized the figure of Faust and for over a decade devoted himself to the composition of Doktor Faust, his last work which remained unfinished at his death (it was later completed by his pupil and collaborator Philipp Jarnach ). Deeming it impossible to make a direct comparison with the most illustrious literary source - Goethe's Faust - Busoni preferred to examine several sources for drafting the libretto including traditional German puppet shows, the drama The Tragical History of Doctor Faustusby Christopher Marlowe, obviously without forgetting the great Goethe. Thus was born a work with a highly symbolic value also accentuated by the formal arc articulation used, which includes an initial symphony, two recited interventions, two prologues, a scenic interlude and three paintings. The central episode, which sees Faust in the guise of a magician at the court of Parma during the celebrations for the wedding of the duke and the duchess, is in fact surrounded by the other episodes which, as antecedents or precedents, are placed in a specular way according to analogies and symbolic references and musical. Without denying the lesson of the past, Busoni adopts a multifaceted writing that equally combines dissonances, diatonic and chromatic scales, counterpoint, Renaissance dances and opera arias.

Come molti artisti anche Busoni idealizzò la figura di Faust e per oltre un decennio si dedicò alla composizione di Doktor Faust, sua ultima opera rimasta incompiuta alla sua morte (sarà completata in seguito dall’allievo e collaboratore Philipp Jarnach). Ritenendo impossibile un confronto diretto con la più illustre fonte letteraria - il Faust di Goethe - Busoni preferì prendere in esame più fonti per la stesura del libretto tra cui gli spettacoli di marionette di tradizione tedesca, il dramma The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus di Christopher Marlowe, senza ovviamente tralasciare il sommo Goethe. Nacque così un’opera dal valore fortemente simbolico accentuato anche dall’articolazione formale ad arco impiegata, che prevede una sinfonia iniziale, due interventi recitati, due prologhi, un intermezzo scenico e tre quadri. L’episodio centrale, che vede Faust nelle vesti di prestigiatore alla corte di Parma durante i festeggiamenti per le nozze del duca e della duchessa, è infatti contornato dagli altri episodi che come antecedenti o precedenti si collocano in maniera speculare secondo analogie e rimandi simbolici e musicali. Senza rinnegare la lezione del passato, Busoni adotta una scrittura multiforme che combina parimenti dissonanze, scale diatoniche e cromatiche, contrappunto, danze rinascimentali e arie d’opera.
