Hierzulande wurde Charles Gounods große, fünfaktige Oper von 1859 über die berühmteste deutsche Figur der kulturellen Mythologie meist unter dem Titel "Margarethe" gespielt. Der Titel "Faust" blieb ausschließlich Goethes bedeutendster Tragödie vorbehalten. Die resignierte Verzweiflung des alternden Wissenschaftlers Heinrich Faust führt in beiden Werken zum Pakt mit dem Teufel, der ihm das unschuldige Gretchen zuführt. Die naive Margarethe wird nun in den Tod der Mutter, des Bruders und ihres unehelichen Kindes verstrickt und so von Faust und Mephisto zu Grunde gerichtet. Die Erlösung findet nicht durch Flucht aus dem Kerker, sondern in höherer Instanz statt. Das Thema Liebe wird musikalisch von Hoffnung und Zweifel über Rausch und Hingabe bis hin zu Enttäuschung und Wahnsinn ausgestaltet und weiß damit den Worten des meistzitierten philosophischen Menschheitsdramas sinnlich etwas entgegenzusetzen. Die Oper entwickelte sich weltweit zum wahren Publikumsliebling des 19. Jahrhunderts: Die New Yorker Metropolitan Opera wurde 1883 mit ihr eingeweiht, und mit rund 3000 Vorstellungen ist "Faust" bis heute das meistgespielte Werk der Pariser Oper.

Philipp Stölzl, von der Zeitschrift "Opernwelt" zum "Bühnenbildner des Jahres" gekürt, hat es 2008 erfolgreich in Basel als sozialkritisch drastisches Gegenwartsdrama von hohem Symbolwert inszeniert. Der Regisseur, der als Bühnen- und Kostümbildner anfing, dann Musikvideos u. a. für Madonna drehte, Werbefilme für BMW, Rolex und Nokia machte, Spielfilme wie "Nordwand" und "Der Medicus" in Szene setzte, zeichnet sich in seiner Vielfalt durch beeindruckende Bilder und psychologisches Feingespür aus und wird so der großen Oper eine cineastische Bühne bereiten.

In Germany, Charles Gounod's great, five-act opera from 1859 about the most famous German figure in cultural mythology was usually performed under the title "Margarethe". The title "Faust" was reserved exclusively for Goethe's most important tragedy. In both works, the resigned desperation of the aging scientist Heinrich Faust leads to a pact with the devil, who brings the innocent Gretchen to him. The naïve Margarethe is now involved in the death of her mother, brother and her illegitimate child and is ruined by Faust and Mephisto. The salvation does not take place by escaping from the dungeon, but in a higher instance. The theme of love is musically developed from hope and doubt to intoxication and devotion to disappointment and madness and thus knows how to counteract the words of the most quoted philosophical drama of mankind with something sensual. The opera developed into a real audience favorite of the 19th century: the New York Metropolitan Opera was inaugurated with it in 1883, and with around 3000 performances "Faust" is still the most frequently performed work at the Paris Opera.

Philipp Stölzl, named "Stage Designer of the Year" by "Opernwelt" magazine, successfully staged it in Basel in 2008 as a drastic, socio-critical contemporary drama of high symbolic value. The director, who started out as a stage and costume designer, then shot music videos for Madonna, among others, made commercials for BMW, Rolex and Nokia, staged feature films such as "North Face" and "The Medic", is distinguished by his variety of impressive images and psychological sensitivity and will thus prepare a cinematic stage for the grand opera.
