Faust enters into a pact with Méphistophélès. He receives youth, wealth and happiness in love and gives his soul in return. He seduces and deceives a girl - Marguerite - and kills her brother. However, pangs of conscience make Faust try to save his soul, which he fails to do. However, at her death, Marguerite manages to escape hell.

Stewart Laing's modern and multi-media interpretation of Gounod's opera was warmly received at its premiere in February 2005.
