Once upon a time there was a poor woodcutter who lived with his wife and two children in front of a large forest; the boy's name was Hansel and the girl's name was Gretel. He had little to bite or break and once, when great inflation came into the country, he could "he can no longer manage his daily bread".

Who doesn't know the Grimm fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel, who are sent into the forest by their parents, get lost there and finally end up with the crispy witch. Based on this story, Engelbert Humperdinck composed his fairy tale play of the same name in 1892. The simple but highly poetic libretto comes from Humperdinck's sister Adelheid Wette, who softened some of the motifs from the original but left the deep psychological subtexts unchanged. 

Musically, the opera impresses with children's songs in a folk tone as well as with a late romantic sound language that is reminiscent of Richard Wagner in places. In our production, the score sounds in an arrangement for chamber orchestra by Alexander Krampe. With her production, Rosamund Gilmore embarks on a journey into the subconscious, combining the deep psychological layers of the fairy tale with the film-visualized works of Claudia Lehmann's students.

Es war einmal ein armer Holzhacker, der wohnte mit seiner Frau und seinen zwei Kindern vor einem großen Walde; das Bübchen hieß Hänsel und das Mädchen Gretel. Er hatte wenig zu beißen und zu brechen und einmal, als große Teuerung ins Land kam, konnte er das tägliche Brot nicht mehr schaffen".

Wer kennt es nicht, das Grimm'sche Märchen von Hänsel und Gretel, die von ihren Eltern in den Wald geschickt werden, sich dort verirren und schließlich bei der Knusperhexe landen. Basierend auf dieser Geschichte hat Engelbert Humperdinck 1892 sein gleichnamiges Märchenspiel komponiert. Das schlichte, aber hochpoetische Libretto stammt von Humperdincks Schwester Adelheid Wette, die eini-ge Motive aus dem Original abmilderte, die tiefenpsychologischen Subtexte jedoch unverändert ließ. 

Musikalisch besticht die Oper ebenso durch Kinderlieder im Volkston wie durch eine spätromantische Klangsprache, die stellenweise an Richard Wagner erinnert. In unserer Produktion erklingt die Partitur in einer Bearbeitung für Kammerorchester von Alexander Krampe. Rosamund Gilmore begibt sich mit Ihrer Inszenierung auf eine Reise ins Unterbewusstsein und verbindet dabei die tiefenpsychologischen Schichten des Märchens mit den filmisch visualisierten Arbeiten der Studierenden von Claudia Lehmann.
