Salvatore Sciarrino's new work should have premiered in March 2020, but it had to be postponed to February 4, 2021 due to the first lockdown. Due to the ongoing infection situation, the theaters will remain closed. Since the important work could not be shown in front of an audience, it was premiered on February 4, 2021, but only in front of media representatives. The ORF radio station Ö1 recorded the dress rehearsal of the production and broadcast it on February 23, 2021. Director Aron Stiehl:“We pulled out all the stops to realize the world premiere of this impressive opera in Klagenfurt. The cooperation with Ö1, which we are particularly pleased about, enables us to make this work of art accessible to the public even in times of Corona.” Salvatore Sciarrino is one of the most important contemporary music theater composers. For his latest opera, he draws inspiration from the tragedies of Aeschylus. The musical direction lies with the young, English-German conductor Tim Anderson. Directed by Nigel Lowery, soprano Rinnat Moriah and bass-baritone Otto Katzameier star as Cassandra and Agamennone. The libretto, written by Sciarrino himself, is based on Agamemnon , the first part of the Oresteia , in which Aeschylus describes the transition from archaic customs such as blood sacrifice and family feuds to the democratic society of the Attic polis. At the center of the plot is Clytemnestra's terrible revenge on Agamemnon, who cannot forgive her husband for either sacrificing her daughter Iphigenia or committing adultery. With Iphigenie in Aulis and Iphigenie auf Tauris by Christoph Willibald Gluck and Elektra by Richard Strauss, the history of opera already has impressive works that tell the story of the daughters of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. Il canto s'attrista, perché?now provides the "missing link" between the operas of Gluck and Strauss, in which both the betrayed wife Klytämnestra and the seer Cassandra have their say.
