»Iolanta« (Trailer) - Anhaltisches Theater Dessau

Tchaikovsky's last opera, Iolanta, is a masterpiece. It was written at the time he was also working on the Symphonie Patétique - and you can hear that in the incredibly expressive and richly orchestrated score. The opera has dramatic climaxes and many arias and ensembles full of wonderful Tchaikovsky melodies. And last but not least: It leads a poignant act to a great happy ending. With her optimistic attitude, Iolanta is ideal to start a season with great opera in our current situation.

In a fairy-tale land with kings, princesses and knights, Tchaikovsky unfolds the story of a young, blind woman who feels the first great love and breaks away from her father, the king, based on a play popular in the 19th century. He locked his daughter away from the outside world, yes, the princess doesn't even know that other people can see. He fears that he will not find an heir to his kingdom if it becomes known that a blind woman must be married. A young knight enters the forbidden castle and finds the sleeping princess. He falls madly in love and woos her. Of course, the young woman learns that there is another world than hers and becomes curious. But when her father finds out about the intruder, he threatens to destroy all hope of the couple. A friend of the knight and a wise doctor can help now.
