Jakob Lenz hears voices. They drive him out into the forest, they torment him with images from the past that cast their shadows over the present. Lenz finds peace in the house of Pastor Oberlin, but it too is short-lived. In the 1830s, Georg Büchner came across the story of the poet Lenz, who was first highly valued by Goethe, then rejected, and gradually went mad. Wolfgang Rihm finally turns Büchner's »Lenz« novella into an opera that tells of the fate of the young poet with disturbing force. A struggle between madness and control, captured in gripping images by Calixto Bieito.
