De estructura típicamente italiana, utiliza los leitmotivs, melodías recurrentes asociadas con ciertos personajes o situaciones, para contar la historia y expresar las emociones de los personajes 

La partitura de esta ópera es una de las más emotivas y líricas del repertorio operístico. El Maestro Puccini tenía la habilidad innata de transmitir las emociones de los personajes a través de su música, y esto se hace evidente en los momentos más íntimos de la ópera, verdaderamente conmovedores y que reflejan la esencia del espíritu bohemio.
