With his madrigals, Claudio Monteverdi made the step from the Renaissance to the Baroque in his own way. He was constantly looking for ways to express great emotions with increasingly simple means. The acclaimed La Compagnia del Madrigale shows how Monteverdi could cry beautifully in music from the start.

Masterfully recognizable Monteverdi
Claudio Monteverdi stood with one foot in the Renaissance and took the Renaissance composer Luca Marenzio as an example. Yet after 1600 he threw all complexity overboard and wrote 'songs' of which the text was intelligible and the emotion immediately understandable. The Baroque was born. With this program, La Compagnia del Madrigale shows how masterfully recognizable Monteverdi was ultimately able to make (love) sorrow sing. In addition to various pieces from his six madrigal books, his masterpiece Lamento d'Arianne , the only remaining notes of Monteverdi's second opera L'Arianne, will also be performed.

Rock-solid baroque collective
When La Compagnia del Madrigale gets involved with Monteverdi, the early Italian baroque really comes to life. The company, founded in 2008, brings a wealth of experience and as a collective, despite the flexible size of the line-up, is very strong. For example, Classical Ear praised the ensemble's "open and warm tone and clarity of texture," and Early Music Today called the vocal ensemble "simply unsurpassed" in early baroque Italian vocal music. And about the Monteverdi performances of La Compagnia del Madrigale, Gramophone wrote that the singers 'get the best out of the music without exaggerating anything.'

Meesterlijk herkenbare Monteverdi
Claudio Monteverdi stond met één been in de renaissance en had de renaissancecomponist Luca Marenzio als voorbeeld. Toch gooide hij na 1600 alle complexiteit overboord en schreef hij ‘songs’ waarvan de tekst verstaanbaar was en de emotie direct begrijpelijk. De barok was geboren. La Compagnia del Madrigale laat met dit programma horen hoe meesterlijk herkenbaar Monteverdi uiteindelijk (liefdes)verdriet kon laten zingen. Naast diverse stukken uit zijn zes madrigaalboeken, klinkt ook zijn meesterwerk Lamento d’Arianne, de enige overgebleven noten van Monteverdi’s tweede opera L’Arianne.

IJzersterk barok collectief
Als La Compagnia del Madrigale zich met Monteverdi bemoeit, komt de vroege Italiaanse barok werkelijk tot leven. Het in 2008 opgerichte gezelschap neemt een schap aan ervaring mee en is als collectief ondanks de flexibele grootte van de bezetting ijzersterk. Zo prees Classical Ear ‘de open en warme toon en de helderheid van textuur’ van het ensemble en noemde Early Music Today het vocale ensemble ‘simpelweg onovertroffen’ in de vroegbarokke Italiaanse vocale muziek. En over de Monteverdi-uitvoeringen van La Compagnia del Madrigale schreef Gramophone al dat de zangers ‘het beste uit de muziek halen zonder iets te overdrijven.’
