More than a century has passed since the premiere of Orfeo and Europe has developed an almost instantaneous taste for Italian opera and its stars, the singers who defy the limit of what is human with their bel canto. But many composers are also beginning to wonder if the embellishments of the voice should prevail over the text and the dramatic action. This and more tensions give rise to a transition that we can hear in this concert. To begin with, we will listen to two of the more than 60 musical adaptations made by different European composers of The Olympiad (L'Olimpiade), a libretto by the popular Pietro Metastasio based on excerpts from Herodotus: the one by GB Pergolesi and the homonymous one by D. Cimarosa; it will continue with Cecchina or Piccinni's good daughter, a work that outlines a new style that softens the borders between serious opera and buffa opera; and he will continue with Gluck's Alceste, a work that tries to put an end to the previous compositional tradition that preferred, for example, Metastasio's librettos and whose music outlines a true reform of opera. It ends with excerpts from Mozart's Don Giovanni, one of the composer's most popular operas that brings together, in a masterpiece, many of the concerns and reforms that took place in the century.
