Впервые Верди обратился не к романтическим событиям прошлого, а к современному и по тем временам скандальному сюжету. Цензура долгое время не допускала невероятно популярный роман Александра Дюма-сына к постановке на драматической сцене. Премьера «Дамы с камелиями» состоялась лишь в 1852 году. По свидетельству издателя и друга Верди Леона Эскудье, «Верди однажды присутствовал на представлении „Дамы с камелиями“, сюжет его поразил, и он ощутил трепет струн своей лиры».

Оперу ждал не самый теплый зрительский прием. Однако и «провалившаяся» опера была неплохо встречена прессой. К примеру, критик газеты «Музыкальная Италия» писал: «На представлении этой оперы мы ощущали себя будто на представлении драмы самого Дюма — настолько, что это не казалось музыкой. <...> С этого момента и впредь на оперы Верди будут ходить в оперный театр точно так же, как в театр драматический».

Год спустя «Травиата», показанная также в венецианском театре — Сан-Бенедетто — в более привычных для публики костюмах XVIII века, была принята публикой с огромным энтузиазмом, после чего началось ее триумфальное шествие по оперным театрам всего мира.

В наши дни «Травиата» Дж. Верди является одной из самых исполняемых опер на Земле. Так, например, в сезоне 2019–20 состоялось 371 представление этой оперы в 164 постановках! Сейчас трудно поверить в то, что опера, без которой невозможно представить историю музыкального театра, без исполнения фрагментов которой не обходится ни один гала-концерт, была не понята и не принята на премьере.

В Большом театре «Травиата» была поставлена впервые в 1858 году — и с тех пор была показана свыше полутора тысяч раз. Не все постановки оставляли яркий режиссерский след в истории театра, однако над этой оперой неизменно работали выдающиеся сценографы: Петр Вильямс, Борис Эрдман, Вадим Рындин, Сергей Бархин. Спектаклями дирижировали Василий Небольсин и Александр Мелик-Пашаев, Кирилл Кондрашин и Борис Хайкин, Марк Эрмлер и Юрий Симонов, Фуат Мансуров и Александр Лазарев, а в заглавной партии выступали Антонина Нежданова, Елена Катульская и Валерия Барсова, Елизавета Шумская, Ирина Масленникова и Галина Вишневская, Бэла Руденко, Ирина Журина и Марина Мещерякова, Альбина Шагимуратова, Венера Гимадиева и многие другие прославленные певицы.

В 2012 году, в первый сезон работы исторического здания театра после масштабной реконструкции, свою версию «Травиаты» представила известный оперный режиссер Франческа Замбелло, уже поставившая к тому времени в Большом оперы «Турандот» Дж. Пуччини и «Огненный ангел» С. Прокофьева.

«“Травиата”, несомненно, — одна из самых великих опер, которые когда-либо были написаны, и одна из наиболее важных работ так называемого «среднего периода» в творчестве Верди. Впервые композитор взял за основу оперы современную, популярную, шокировавшую общество книгу, а не миф или, скажем, пьесу Шекспира. Это была настоящая революция, настоящий шок для публики: опера, рассказывающая о реальных людях, живущих в настоящее время, с настоящими проблемами, о любви опытной женщины и совсем юного молодого человека, которые, к тому же, происходили из разных социальных слоев, о неизлечимой болезни. К тому же, «Травиата» не из тех произведений, в которых любовь побеждает все», — так, приступая к работе над постановкой, сформулировала свое видение этой оперы Франческа Замбелло.

The premiere of the opera La Traviata was on the 6th of March 1853 at Teatro La Fenice in Venice. It was the first time that Verdi referred not to the romantic events of the past but a contemporary and, for those days, scandalous plot. It took a long time for the censors to allow an extremely popular novel by Alexandre Dumas fils to be presented on stage. The premiere of La Dame aux Camélias took place only in 1852. According to Léon Escudier, a publisher and friend of Verdi: “Once Verdi attended a performance of La Dame aux Camélias, he was struck by the plot and felt a flutter in the strings of his lyra”.

The opera did not receive a warm reception from the audience. However, even the “failed” opera was greeted reasonably well by the press. For instance, a critic from “Musical Italy” newspaper wrote: “At the performance of this opera we felt as if we were at a performance of drama by Duma himself, to the extent that it did not seem like music. <…> Since that moment Verdi’s operas will be attended just as drama theatres.” A year later La Traviata was shown at San Benedetto in Venice in the 18th century costumes which the audience was more accustomed to. It was received with great enthusiasm, after which its triumphal march across the opera theatres around the world began.

In our time G. Verdi’s La Traviata is one of the most frequently performed operas on Earth. For example, in the 2019-20 season there were 371 performances of the opera in 164 stage versions! It is hard to believe now that the opera, without which the history of musical theatre is absolutely unimaginable and extracts from which are performed at any gala-concert, was not understood and accepted at its premiere.

In the Bolshoi theatre La Traviata was first staged in 1858 and has been shown over fifteen hundred times since. Not every staging has left a significant mark in history, though there have always been outstanding set designers who have worked on this opera: Piotr Williams, Boris Erdman, Vadim Ryndin, Sergei Barkhin. The performances were conducted by Vassili Nebolsin and Alexander Melik-Pashayev, Kirill Kondrashin and Boris Khaykin, Mark Ermler and Yuri Simonov, Fuat Mansurov and Aleksandr Lazarev, and the leading part was performed by Antonina Neshdanova, Elena Katulska and Valeria Barsova, Elizaveta Shamskaya, Irina Maslennikova and Galina Vishnevskaya, Bela Rudenko, Irina Zhurina and Marina Mescheriakova, Albina Shagimuratova, Venera Gimadieva and many more glorified female singers.

In 2012, during the first season at the historic building after its thorough renovation, famous opera director Francesca Zambello presented her version of La Traviata. She had already staged Turandot by G. Puccini and The Fiery Angel by S. Prokofiev at the Bolshoi.

“The opera La Traviata is undoubtedly one of the greatest ever written and one of the most important works from Verdi’s so called “middle period”. For the first time the composer took a modern, popular book that shocked people, as the basis of an opera, not a myth or, let’s say, Shakespeare play. It was a real revolution, a real shock for the public: an opera talking about real people living at the real time with real problems; about the love of an experienced woman and a quite young man who came from totally different strata of society; about an incurable disease. Moreover, La Traviata is not one of those works where love overcomes anything”, this is how Francesca Zambello phrased her vision approaching the production.
