Paris 1842, the Opéra-Comique presents Le Code Noir . Great success, hailed by Berlioz, performed four years in a row. In 1848, the Second French Republic abolished slavery. With the sixteen musicians of the Les Paladins ensemble and seven lyrical singers, conductor Jérôme Correas and director Jean-Pierre Baro breathe new life into this highly acuity comic opera.

Donatien, brought up in France, far from his parents, has reason to believe that he is from a noble family. He returns to Martinique and manages to find his mother. But he is recognized by a slave and sold for the benefit of the government according to the law of the black code, which governs the fate of slaves in the colonies.
As through the bay window of the governor's residence, we will follow the twists and turns of this fable. The rules of the black code weave the bonds between the characters. Jean-Pierre Baro will bring to the stage the sufferings and struggles for emancipation of the romantic era and today. At the head of the Paladins, Jérôme Correas will express a passionate music that ranges from graceful bel canto to tumultuous lyric.

Paris 1842, l’Opéra-Comique présente Le Code Noir. Grand succès, salué par Berlioz, joué quatre années d’affilées. En 1848, la IIe République française abolit l’esclavage. Avec les seize musiciens de l’ensemble Les Paladins et sept chanteurs lyriques, le chef Jérôme Correas et le metteur en scène Jean-Pierre Baro redonnent vie à cet opéra-comique d’une grande acuité.

Donatien, élevé en France, loin de ses parents, a lieu de croire qu’il est d’une famille noble. Il rentre en Martinique et parvient à retrouver sa mère. Mais il est reconnu par un esclave et vendu au profit du gouvernement suivant la loi du code noir, qui régit le sort des esclaves dans les colonies.
Comme à travers la baie vitrée de la demeure du gouverneur, nous suivrons les péripéties et rebondissements de cette fable. Les règles du code noir tissent les liens entre les personnages. Jean-Pierre Baro portera au plateau les souffrances et les combats pour l’émancipation de l’époque romantique et d’aujourd’hui. À la tête des Paladins, Jérôme Correas exprimera une musique passionnée qui va du bel canto gracieux au lyrique tumultueux.
