Überlegungen zur Neuinszenierung von »Le nozze di Figaro«
Heute nun gehört Mozarts »Le nozze di Figaro« zu den meistgespielten, bekanntesten und beliebtesten Opern des Repertoires. Doch hat sie uns 230 Jahre nach ihrer Entstehung und je nach Zählung mindestens fünf bis sechs Revolutionen weiter (1789, 1848, 1918, 1945, 1968, 1989) eigentlich wirklich noch etwas zu sagen? Wie ist diese Muster-Oper aus der Zeit der »Wiener Klassik« im 21. Jahrhundert an uns heranzuholen?

Für die Dresdner »Figaro«-Konzeption hat uns eine philologisch womöglich unzulässig freie Interpretation mit Rückbezug auf das Werk von Beaumarchais inspiriert, die weiter greift als nur auf die unmittelbare Vorlage. Für uns lassen sich nämlich die drei Schauspiele der heute so genannten »Figaro«-Trilogie von Beaumarchais pointiert gelesen als Verweise auf drei verschiedene Genres verstehen, die jeweils eingebettet sind in historisch unterscheidbare gesellschaftskulturelle Zusammenhänge. Und diese verschiedenen Sichtweisen führen vom Rokoko des 18. Jahrhunderts über die europäischen Revolutionen bis hinein in unsere heutige Bürgerlichkeit.

»Die nutzlose Vorsicht oder Der Barbier von Sevilla« von 1775 – obwohl ursprünglich als Text für eine Oper konzipiert – ist noch am stärksten den Hanswurstiaden verbunden, die Beaumarchais um 1763 verfasste, also einem volkstümlichen Theater der Jahrmärkte, das wie die ältesten Formen der Commedia dell’arte in Italien ursprünglich als eine Art Anlock-Stehgreifspiel mit immer den gleichen szenischen Schablonen und Figuren vor den Bretterbuden des Jahrmarkts geboten wurde. Voll von derber Situationskomik, Slapstick-Elementen und unverhüllten sexuellen Anzüglichkeiten, brachte es allgemeine menschliche Gefühle auf den Punkt. Und gerade deshalb dürften sich hinter den Schablonen der Figuren, ihren typisierten Kostümen und dem sich immer wiederholenden Plot die Zuschauer doch selbst erkannt und belacht haben.

Beaumarchais’ »Der tolle Tag oder Figaros Hochzeit«, 1784 in Paris auf der Kippe zur Revolution entstanden und uraufgeführt, ist mit seiner frechen Satire und dem Spott auf die Welt der Adeligen das gewitzteste Stück der ganzen Trilogie. Als deren Mittelstück ist es auch wahrhaftig deren Herzstück, weil sich hier über Spaß und Rührung hinaus ein gesellschaftliches Anliegen artikuliert. Es ist eine Komödie mit Spaß an der Revolution, ein Intrigenspiel, das weit über Situationskomik hinausgeht, mit Sprachwitz und unter Verwendung schon quasi-psychologischer Begründungen.

»L’Autre Tartuffe ou la Mère coupable« (»Ein zweiter Tartuffe oder Die Schuld der Mutter«, eigentlich eher: »die sündige, ehebrecherische Mutter«), entstanden 1790, uraufgeführt 1792 in Paris, der vielleicht zu Recht heute beinahe vergessene postrevolutionäre Schluss der Trilogie von Beaumarchais, ist für uns am ehesten als Antizipation des bürgerlichen Trauerspiels in noch erhaltener Komödiengestalt zu verstehen, wie sie uns heute womöglich beim gut gemachten Boulevardtheater begegnen kann. Das Stück spielt 1790, die Französische Revolution ist geschehen, und die uns bekannten Figuren sind tatsächlich inzwischen nach Paris gezogen und üben sich in Bürgerlichkeit. Wie dann allmählich herauskommt, besteht die Schuld der Mutter in der seit den Ereignissen aus »Der tolle Tag« doch noch ausgelebten Liebe zu Cherubino, der, selbst gefallen, ihr einen Sohn hinterlassen hat: Léon, der nun im Pariser Palais des Grafen offiziell als dessen Sohn lebt. Doch auch der Graf hat inzwischen eine heimliche Tochter aus der Verbindung mit einer anderen Frau, Florestine, die er als Mündel in sein Haus aufgenommen hat. So ergibt sich einerseits eine an »Der tolle Tag« erinnernde Figurenkonstellation, bei der Graf und Gräfin sich als gleichwertig Schuldige am Ende gegenseitig verzeihen und auf die inzwischen amtlich eingeführte Möglichkeit zur Ehe-Scheidung doch noch verzichten können. Andererseits ist, wie schon im Titel mit der expliziten Bezugnahme auf Molière angedeutet, auch eine neue Konstellation eingeführt, indem Figaro im Tartuffe ähnlichen Monsieur Bégearss einen hochtalentierten Gegenspieler findet, der es auf das Geld aller abgesehen hat.

Projiziert auf Mozarts »Le nozze di Figaro«, lässt sich die Bezugnahme auf die Schauspiel-Trilogie von Beaumarchais nutzen, indem wir nun den ersten Akt erkennbar als »veraltetes« Theater mit Figuren der Commedia dell’arte realisieren: Susanna und Figaro, Graf und Cherubino, Marcellina und Bartolo bespielen in den Kostümen der Commedia dell’arte – sich selbst dazu noch gegenseitig spiegelnd – eine Bretterbühne auf der Bühne, die die Trickkiste des Theaters im ganz wörtlichen Sinne erfahrbar werden lässt. Mozarts zweiten und dritten »Figaro«-Akt lassen wir dann wie ein Rokoko- Theater aussehen, das den Spaß an Intrigen und Täuschung, Sprachwitz und Versteckspiel als »revolutionäre« Provokation und als Aufmüpfigkeit gegen die ständische Ordnung verdeutlicht. Und im vierten Akt wird uns schließlich die in Beaumarchais’ letztem Trilogie-Teil erahnbare Vorausschau auf das bürgerliche Trauerspiel zu Anreiz und Legitimation, das Opernspiel in den Formen und Attitüden heutiger Schauspielkunst stattfinden zu lassen.

Das kann dann der Melancholie und Tristesse bürgerlicher Sicherheit ebenso entsprechen wie der in Mozarts Finale scheinbar wiederhergestellten guten Ordnung der in Treue gehaltenen Ehe. Die beständige Betonung der Theatersituation mit sichtbaren Verweisen auf die historischen Theaterformen im Bühnenbild, den Kostümen und der Personenregie lässt im Kern dieses Spiels im Spiel hoffentlich dann wieder die ganz rudimentären menschlichen Gefühle nachvollziehbar werden, um die es auch im heutigen Leben immer noch geht: Begehren, Spaß, Eifersucht, Lust, Angst und ja – die Liebe! Reflections on the new production of »Le nozze di Figaro«
Today, Mozart's »Le nozze di Figaro« is one of the most frequently performed, well-known and popular operas in the repertoire. But does it really still have something to tell us 230 years after its creation and, depending on how you count it, at least five to six revolutions later (1789, 1848, 1918, 1945, 1968, 1989)? How can this model opera from the »Viennese Classic« era be brought to us in the 21st century?

For the Dresden »Figaro« conception, we were inspired by a philologically impermissibly free interpretation with reference to the work of Beaumarchais, which goes further than just the immediate model. For us, the three plays of what is now known as the »Figaro« trilogy by Beaumarchais can be read pointedly as references to three different genres, each of which is embedded in historically distinguishable socio-cultural contexts. And these different points of view lead from the Rococo of the 18th century through the European revolutions to our present-day bourgeoisie.

"Useless Prudence, or The Barber of Seville" from 1775 - although originally conceived as a text for an opera - is still most closely associated with the Hanswurstiads that Beaumarchais wrote around 1763, i.e. a popular theater of fairs that, like the oldest forms of commedia dell'arte in Italy was originally offered as a kind of stand-up baiting game with always the same scenic templates and figures in front of the wooden stalls at the fair. Full of crude situational comedy, slapstick elements and undisguised sexual insinuations, it summed up common human feelings. And that's exactly why the viewers should have recognized and laughed at themselves behind the templates of the characters, their standardized costumes and the repetitive plot.

Beaumarchais' »The Great Day or The Marriage of Figaro«, composed and premiered in Paris in 1784 on the brink of revolution, is the wittiest piece of the entire trilogy with its cheeky satire and mockery of the world of the nobility. As its centerpiece, it is also truly its heart, because here, beyond fun and emotion, a social concern is articulated. It is a comedy with fun in the revolution, an intrigue that goes far beyond situation comedy, with wit and using already quasi-psychological justifications.

»L'Autre Tartuffe ou la Mère coupable« (»A second Tartuffe or The guilt of the mother«, actually more: »the sinful, adulterous mother«), composed in 1790, premiered in Paris in 1792, the post-revolutionary piece that is perhaps rightly almost forgotten today The end of the Beaumarchais trilogy is best understood by us as an anticipation of the bourgeois tragedy in the form of a comedy that is still preserved, as we may encounter today in well-done boulevard theater. Projected onto Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro", the reference to Beaumarchais' drama trilogy can be used by now recognizably realizing the first act as "outdated" theater with figures from the Commedia dell'arte: Susanna and Figaro, Count and Cherubino, Marcellina and Bartolo, dressed in commedia dell'arte costumes and mirroring each other, perform on a plank stage on stage, which allows the theater's box of tricks to be experienced in a very literal sense. We then make Mozart's second and third »Figaro« acts look like a rococo theater that illustrates the fun of intrigues and deception, wit and hide-and-seek as »revolutionary« provocation and rebellion against the corporate order.

This can then correspond to the melancholy and sadness of bourgeois security as well as to the good order of the faithful marriage apparently restored in Mozart's finale. The constant emphasis on the theatrical situation with visible references to historical theater forms in the stage design, the costumes and the directing of the characters hopefully makes the very rudimentary human feelings that are still at stake in today's life again understandable at the core of this game within the game: desire , fun, jealousy, lust, fear and yes – love!
