The action takes place at the Lido di Ostia in the 1950s, a seaside resort where the beautiful and the rich meet. See and be seen is the motto and life is celebrated brightly and colorfully here.
Adina, tenant of the Kursaal, enjoys being the center of attention. A love story unfolds between her and the dashing Captain Belcore. But wait, that would be too easy for an opera. So there's Nemorino, who loves Adina, seemingly without any prospect of success, but he persists. He buys a magic potion, which the quick-spoken quack Dulcamara sells to him as a panacea, including for unrequited love, of course. After a few surprising twists and turns, Nemorino and Adina finally find each other - a happy ending for these two. Only Belcore is quite dissatisfied with the outcome of the opera...

Ort der Handlung ist der Lido di Ostia in den 50er Jahren, ein Seebad, in dem sich die Schönen und die Reichen treffen. Sehen und gesehen werden ist das Motto und grell und bunt wird hier das Leben gefeiert.
Adina, Pächterin des Kursaals, geniesst es, im Mittelpunkt zu stehen. Zwischen ihr und dem schneidigen Kapitän Belcore entspinnt sich eine Liebesgeschichte. Aber halt, das wäre ja zu einfach für eine Oper. Also ist da noch Nemorino, der Adina liebt, scheinbar ohne jede Aussicht auf Erfolg, aber er bleibt hartnäckig. Er erwirbt einen Zaubertrank, den der zungenfertige Quacksalber Dulcamara ihm als Allheilmittel, natürlich auch gegen unerwiderte Liebe, verkauft. Nach ein paar überraschenden Irrungen, Wirrungen und Wendungen finden sich am Ende Nemorino und Adina doch noch – Happy End für diese beiden. Lediglich Belcore ist mit dem Ausgang der Oper ziemlich unzufrieden…
