The young, rich and extremely witty tenant Adina rejects Nemorino's somewhat awkward courtship. It is not for nothing that he is fascinated by the saga of Tristan and Isolde, as here the love-drunk Tristan succeeds in winning over his beloved with the help of a magic potion. The naïve young man Doctor Dulcamara is quite right, he offers a potion that conjures up feelings of love. Full of enthusiasm, Nemorino buys the promising elixir, but the effect is slow in coming, Adina continues to ignore him and instead turns to the dashing Sergeant Belcore. That's why the entire women's world of the village community is now after Nemorino. Is that because of the potion? Adina's curiosity and jealousy are definitely aroused.

Die junge, reiche und äußerst gewitzte Pächterin Adina lehnt die etwas unbeholfenen Liebeswerbungen Nemorinos ab. Nicht umsonst ist dieser ganz fasziniert von der Sage von Tristan und Isolde, gelingt es doch hier dem liebestrunkenen Tristan mit Hilfe eines Zaubertranks, seine Angebetete zu erobern. Da kommt dem naiven jungen Mann Doktor Dulcamara ganz recht, bietet dieser doch einen Liebesgefühle herbeizaubernden Trank an. Voller Begeisterung kauft Nemorino das vielversprechende Elixier, doch die Wirkung lässt auf sich warten, Adina würdigt ihn weiterhin keines Blickes und wendet sich stattdessen dem schneidigen Sergeanten Belcore zu. Dafür ist die gesamte Damenwelt der Dorfgemeinschaft nun hinter Nemorino her. Ob das aber am Trank liegt? Adinas Neugier und Eifersucht sind auf jeden Fall geweckt.
