Video: intersection office for moving images GbR Jacques Offenbach Drame lyrique in five acts by Jules Barbier In French with German surtitles [bit.ly/1DzdKVH] Jacques Offenbach, described by Rossini as the "Mozart of the Champs-Elysees", the inventor of the satirically sparkling opéra bouffe, turns towards the intricately ghostly world of ETA Hoffmann at the end of his life in order to create an opera together with Jules Barbier from his play LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN. Offenbach initially planned a version with recitatives, but the Paris Theâtre de la Gaité-Lyrique went bankrupt. Now the work is to be released at the Opéra-Comique - as is customary here with dialogues between the musical passages. But on the 5th In October 1880, Offenbach died during rehearsals for his opéra comique, leaving behind little more than a torso, a shambles of countless versions and variants. A first performance of the work, albeit in a severely mutilated version, takes place on February 10, 1881. In the more than 125 years of extremely successful performance history, it was followed by countless so-called »world premieres«, all too often with new compositions by someone else.
