De Finse dirigent Hannu Lintu staat voor het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest in Nielsens Vijfde Symfonie en begeleidt Alina Ibragimova in het Vioolconcert van Sibelius. Als opening een geheel nieuw werk van Mathilde Wantenaar.

'Als je reist gaat er een nieuwe wereld voor je open; zo is het ook als je de concertzaal binnenstapt', aldus Malthilde Wantenaar. Zij stapt dit concert dan ook binnen met een nieuwe compositie, geschreven in opdracht van AVROTROS. Daarna is het woord aan de Brits-Russische violiste Alina Ibragimova, die haar carrière als zesjarige begon bij het Bolshoi Orkest in Moskou en nog steeds een van de meest vooraanstaande violisten van onze tijd is. Zij soleert in het uiterst virtuoze Vioolconcert van Sibelius, dat bij de wereldpremière in 1904 nog bijna onspeelbaar werd geacht, maar dat tegenwoordig op het repertoire van elke sterviolist staat.

'Als ik reis van de ene concertzaal naar de andere, kan ik even uitrusten van alle hectiek van het podium', zegt de Finse dirigent Hannu Lintu, die vorig seizoen zijn verrassende debuut bij het New York Philharmonic Orchestra maakte. Hij dirigeert het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest in de Vijfde Symfonie van Nielsen. In de twee delen die het werk telt, neemt de componist je mee op een reis van grote contrasten. Hij omschreef het zelf als 'de scheiding tussen licht en duister, de strijd tussen goed en kwaad'. Op de partituur schreef hij de cryptische zin 'donkere stille krachten, actieve krachten'. Een symfonie die je niet gauw vergeet.

"When you travel, a new world opens up to you; so it is when you step into the concert hall," said Malthilde Wantenaar. She enters this concert with a new composition, commissioned by AVROTROS. Next up is the British-Russian violinist Alina Ibragimova, who began her career as a six-year-old with the Bolshoi Orchestra in Moscow and remains one of the leading violinists of our time. She will solo in Sibelius' highly virtuosic Violin Concerto, which was still considered almost unplayable at its world premiere in 1904, but which today is on every star violinist's repertoire.

"When I travel from one concert hall to another, I can take a break from all the hustle and bustle of the stage," says Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu, who made his surprise debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra last season. He conducts the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in Nielsen's Fifth Symphony. In the work's two movements, the composer takes you on a journey of great contrasts. He himself described it as "the division between light and darkness, the struggle between good and evil. On the score he wrote the cryptic phrase "dark silent forces, active forces. A symphony not easily forgotten.
