Lola Blau, a young Jewish stage artist, lives in Austria in 1938. Excited and full of anticipation, she is looking forward to her first theater engagement in Linz. But things don't turn out as planned: Hitler's invasion forces her to flee to Switzerland, where she makes ends meet as a singer in a cabaret before the aliens' police declare her an undesirable person. Fortunately, she manages to obtain an entry permit for the USA within a very short time. She becomes a celebrated star, but loneliness increasingly takes hold of her. After the end of the war, she returns to the country that was once her home and has to find that life there is further from a tolerant coexistence than ever before. Since its premiere in Vienna in 1971, the one-person play Tonight has: Lola Blau has lost none of its topicality. The great composer, singer-songwriter, cabaret artist and poet Georg Kreisler (1922-2011) succeeded in criticizing the political situation in a musical that was entertaining at first glance, and in taking an unvarnished look at the situation of artists in the Third Age to enable empire. Kreisler, the son of a Jewish lawyer who had to emigrate from Vienna himself in 1938, wrote about his work: “Lola Blau is the story of powerlessness. Lola is just as helpless in the face of anti-Semitism as she is of her own Judaism. She is powerless against the stubborn Swiss, rages powerless against the sex career in America, and finally she is powerless again against the Austrian die-hards. All she really wants to do is dance and sing a little and make her audience happy. But she has to realize that it's no use just trying to snag a small, humble spot in the sun.
