Luisa Miller, the Tyrolean peasant girl, thinks she has found happiness - but her heart's choice, Carlo, who believed the simple peasant boy, was in fact the son of Count Walter, Rodolfo. Wurm, the count's secretary, wants to marry Luis herself, so he betrays the lovers to Count Walter. The Count chose Princess Federica as his son's wife, and threatens to lock Miller and her daughter Luisa in prison. Rodolfo only manages to temporarily block his father's plan — Count Walter eventually jails Miller and blackmails Luis. The girl agrees to write a love letter to Wurm in exchange for the Count releasing her father. Rodolfo is shown Luisa's letter and his father advises him to take Princess Federica out of revenge. Miller is released and is about to leave the village with his daughter,
