In 1927 the premiere of “Mahagonny Songspiel” took place as a commissioned work of the music festival “German Chamber Music Baden-Baden”. It was Kurt Weill‘s first collaboration with Bertolt Brecht. Shortly after, the score was withdrawn, and Brecht and Weill began to develop their three-act, full-length opera “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” from the material. The “Songspiel” in its original form is still a rarely performed work today.

A co-production of Musiktheater Wien eV, Europäisches Musiktheater eV. and FBMC (Director: Avigail Arnheim). The performances in Vienna and Krakow were made possible by the generous support of Mordechai Rotgold, Ambassador of the Republic of Israel and Ralf Beste, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Vienna.

בשנת 1927 התקיימה הבכורה של "מהגוני – מחזה בשירים" כיצירה מוזמנת של פסטיבל המוזיקה "מוסיקה קאמרית גרמנית באדן-באדן". זה היה שיתוף הפעולה הראשון של קורט וייל עם ברטולט ברכט.

זה היה שיתוף הפעולה הראשון של קורט וייל עם ברטולט ברכט. קספר נהר עיצב את התפאורה כזירת אגרוף, ברכט היה מנהל הבמה – המופע עורר התלהבות מצד המבקרים כמו גם מחאה מהקהל. לאחר זמן המופע בוטל, ברכט ווייל החלו לפתח את האופרה בת שלוש המערכות באורך מלא "עלייתה ונפילתה של העיר מהגוני" מתוך החומר של המחזה.
