The work focuses on the second half of the life of María Moliner, the lexicographer, when, making virtue of a necessity, and using the cultural lock-down she found herself trapped in after the Francoist victory in the Civil War, she decided to undertake her astonishing idea: the feat of compiling, by herself, at home, a dictionary the standard of which was to show up the Academy members’ dictionary...
The creation of this opera came about from an idea of Paco Azorín’s to reclaim the figure of the great lexicographer. With Lucía Vilanova’s libretto (2012) and music (2016) by Antoni Parera Fons, Azorín’s own stage direction is conceived as a contemporary documentary opera “thought out, written and composed for today’s audiences”. A synthesis of the musical drama which uses a modern formula, rich in contrasts and emotions. It is all stage and theatre, and therefore, it is full of energy. According to the composer, Parera Fons “I composed it without being afraid to brush with danger. It was a leap without a safety net”.
