In 1818, still very young, at the age of 26, Gioachino Rossini had created in Naples Mosè in Egitto . Nine years later, in Paris, he takes up again with Moses and Pharaoh the fascinating theme of the departure of the Hebrews, their long captivity in Egypt and the crossing of the Red Sea which begins their exodus towards the promised land.
Rossini signs here one of the first great operas "à la française", this new genre which by its deliberately political subjects, its monumental dimensions, its musical and scenic inventions reflects the history of the 19th century, agitated by antagonisms, violence and the issues of the seven political regimes that succeeded each other in power after the Revolution.
Since the mythical time of the exodus, have exiles and migrations ever ceased? Daniele Rustioni seizes on this timeless drama, and the young German director Tobias Kratzer returns to the Opéra de Lyon, after his memorable Guillaume Tell , by the same Rossini, in 2019.

En 1818, tout jeune encore, à 26 ans, Gioachino Rossini avait créé à Naples Mosè in Egitto. Neuf ans après, à Paris, il reprend avec Moïse et Pharaon le thème fascinant du départ des Hébreux, de leur longue captivité en Égypte et de la traversée de la Mer Rouge qui entame leur exode vers la terre promise.
Rossini signe là l’un des premiers grands opéras « à la française », ce genre nouveau qui par ses sujets volontiers politiques, ses dimensions monumentales, ses inventions musicales et scéniques reflète l’histoire du XIXe siècle, agitée par les antagonismes, les violences et les enjeux des sept régimes politiques qui se succèdent au pouvoir après la Révolution.
Depuis le temps mythique de l’exode, les exils et les migrations ont-ils jamais cessé ? Daniele Rustioni s’empare de ce drame de toujours, et le jeune metteur en scène allemand Tobias Kratzer revient à l’Opéra de Lyon, après son mémorable Guillaume Tell, du même Rossini, en 2019.
