A child is born, someone dies, the sea roars inexorably ... Between morning and evening, life and death, reality and dream, longing and illusion, this opera by Georg Friedrich Haas, who was born in Graz, glides into an extraordinary maelstrom: On a morning the fisherman awaits Olai experiences the birth of his child with every fiber of his body: Johannes is born. Later in the evening we meet Johannes, who is now older, who became a fisherman like his father and is now retired. His wife Erna has already passed away and their daughter Signe regularly looks after her father. When he wakes up one morning, he experiences the world in a new way, he suddenly no longer feels the weakness of his body and experiences disturbing encounters.
Georg Friedrich Haas' highly expressive setting of this subject achieved an extraordinary triumph when it premiered at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden London in November 2015. After performances at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Theater Heidelberg, this rousing opera will have its Austrian premiere at the Graz Opera in a production by Immo Karaman. In the role of Olai we meet the internationally renowned actor Cornelius Obonya, who is returning to Graz after his success as Peer Gynt. Under the musical direction of chief conductor Roland Kluttig, the emotions and the sea roar, enveloping the story of Olai, his son Johannes, embodied by ensemble member Markus Butter, and his daughter Signe, sung by Cathrin Lange, who was already a blonde at the Graz Opera see was.
