Le premier requiem en langue allemande transformé en rite intemporel d’adieu et d’acceptation. 
Compositeur allemand parmi les plus importants avant Jean-Sébastien Bach, Heinrich Schütz a écrit ses Musikalische Exequien alors que la peste et la guerre de Trente Ans semaient la mort et la destruction à travers l’Europe. Ayant perdu en peu de temps ses parents, sa femmes et ses deux filles, Schütz, s’inspire de cette expérience tragique et livre une méditation chargée d’émotions sur le deuil, pour quelques solistes et un petit chœur. Plutôt que de prendre pour modèle l’habituel requiem en latin, il met en musique un recueil de courts textes liturgiques en langue vernaculaire évoquant la tristesse, le réconfort et le pardon. 

Le metteur en scène Peter Sellars et la Los Angeles Master Chorale abordent cette œuvre poignante à la manière d’une cérémonie du souvenir et de l’acceptation empreinte de tendresse. Les passages choraux éthérés offrent réconfort et contemplation, tandis que les solos ménagent un moment de deuil intime mais partagé. Jusqu’au moment où, dans la chorégraphie épurée qui accompagne l’ensemble, la vie reprend son cours pour les proches – avec la conviction que ce qui semble si loin est en réalité toujours proche.

The first requiem in German as a timeless ritual of bereavement and mourning 
As the Plague and the Thirty Years’ War left a trail of death and destruction across Europe, Heinrich Schütz, one of the most important German composers prior to Johann Sebastian Bach, wrote his Musikalische Exequien. Based on his personal experience – having lost his parents, his wife and later his two daughters in a short period of time –, Schütz composed a deeply felt meditation on bereavement and mourning for a force of a few soloists and a small choir. Instead of reverting to the usual Latin requiem, he set to music a collection of short liturgical texts in the vernacular, about grief, comfort and forgiveness. 

In this twenty-first-century interpretation, director Peter Sellars and the Los Angeles Master Chorale perform this moving work as a tender ceremony of remembrance and mourning. Ethereal choral passages offer comfort and contemplation, solos an intimate but shared moment of grief. Until, in a minimalist choreography, the life of the bereaved finally picks up its rhythm. Trusting that what seems so far away is always near.

Het eerste Duitstalige requiem als een tijdloos ritueel van afscheid en verwerking
Terwijl de Pest en de Dertigjarige Oorlog een spoor van dood en verwoesting door Europa trokken, schreef Heinrich Schütz, een van de belangrijkste Duitse componisten vóór Johann Sebastian Bach, zijn Musikalische Exequien. Gestoeld op zijn persoonlijke ervaringen – Schütz verloor op korte tijd zijn ouders, zijn echtgenote en later ook zijn beide dochters – componeerde hij een diep doorvoelde meditatie op afscheid en rouw voor een bezetting van enkele solisten en een klein koor. Hij greep daarbij niet terug naar het gebruikelijke Latijnse requiem, maar verklankte een verzameling korte liturgische teksten in de volkstaal, over verdriet, troost en vergeving. 

In hun 21ste-eeuwse interpretatie brengen regisseur Peter Sellars en het Los Angeles Master Chorale dit werk als een tedere ceremonie van herinnering en verwerking. Etherische koorpassages bieden er troost en contemplatie, solo’s een intiem maar gedeeld moment van rouw. Tot in de uitgepuurde choreografie het leven van de nabestaanden finaal zijn ritme herneemt. In het vertrouwen dat wat zo ver lijkt steeds nabij is.
