In Nature’s Realm, een concertouverture van Antonín Dvořák, klinkt als een landschapsschildering van de vredige bossen omheen het thuisdorp van de Tsjechische componist. Het contrapunt op het einde van dit werk is een ode aan Johann Sebastian Bach.

Nog idyllischer wordt het in het Vioolconcerto van de Finse componist Jean Sibelius. Geobsedeerd door Finse sagen, meren en bossen combineert Sibelius in dit werk een laatromantische stijl met een moderne Noordse klankesthetica. Overbekend is de melodie waarmee de viool het concerto opent, begeleid door zacht pulserende strijkers. Na een hoogromantisch, ongelofelijk lyrisch tweede deel, komt een ronduit extatisch finaledeel dat heel wat virtuositeit van de solist vraagt en door Sibelius als een ‘danse macabre’ werd beschreven. De Duitse violist Christian Tetzlaff, die zich in juni 2021 in Bozar liet opmerken met een fenomenale interpretatie van het Vioolconcerto van Beethoven, is de gedroomde solist voor Sibelius’ beroemdste werk.

Geassocieerd dirigent Michael Schønwandt werpt zich al jaren op als ambassadeur van de Deense componist Carl Nielsen, onder andere met gevierde opnames van al zijn symfonieën en al zijn concerti. Met het Belgian National Orchestra brengt hij in dit concert de Derde symfonie: het werk waarmee Carl Nielsen in 1912 nationaal én internationaal doorbrak. Het tweede deel van deze symfonie, met woordloze solo’s voor sopraan en bariton, verklankt de vredevolle, paradijselijke stemming van de natuur voor de zondeval. Na dit pastorale andante kondigen de hoorns een tussen majeur en mineur twijfelend, ritmisch scherzo aan met glansrollen +voor de houtblazers. De vierde en laatste beweging, “een hymne aan het werk en aan de gezonde activiteit van het dagelijkse leven” (Carl Nielsen), gaat uit van een volksachtighymnisch thema en bereikt met breed uitgestreken contrapunt een grandioze climax. De schaduwen en wanhoop die Carl Nielsens latere symfonieën kenmerken, zijn in de vooroorlogse Derde symfonie nog in geen veld of wegen te bespeuren.

In Nature’s Realm (Dans le Royaume de la Nature), une ouverture de concert du Tchèque Antonín Dvořák, évoque à la manière d’une peinture les paysages et l’atmosphère paisible des forêts entourant son village natal. Le contrepoint à la fin de cette oeuvre est une ode à Johann Sebastian Bach.

Le Concerto pour violon du compositeur finlandais Jean Sibelius plonge l’auditeur dans un paysage encore plus idyllique. Fasciné par les légendes et la multitude de lacs et de forêts de son pays natal, Sibelius combine dans cette oeuvre un style romantique tardif et une esthétique nordique moderne. La mélodie d’ouverture au violon, accompagnée par les douces pulsations des cordes, est archiconnue. Au deuxième mouvement incroyablement lyrique et d’un grand romantisme succède un dernier mouvement extatique qui exige une incroyable virtuosité de la part du soliste. Sibelius l’a qualifié de « danse macabre ». Le violoniste allemand Christian Tetzlaff, dont l’interprétation magistrale du Concerto pour violon de Beethoven a fait forte impression à Bozar en juin 2021, revient pour jouer l’oeuvre la plus célèbre de Sibelius. On ne pouvait rêver meilleur soliste !

Le chef associé Michael Schønwandt se fait depuis plusieurs années l’ambassadeur de Carl Nielsen, avec entre autres l’enregistrement très applaudi de l’intégralité des symphonies et des concertos de ce compositeur danois. Il dirige ce soir le Belgian National Orchestra dans la Symphonie n°3 de Nielsen, une oeuvre de 1912 qui l’a fait connaître dans son pays et dans le monde entier. Le deuxième mouvement de cette symphonie, ponctué de solos sans parole pour soprano et baryton, dépeint l’atmosphère paisible et paradisiaque de la nature avant le péché originel. Après cet andante bucolique, les cors annoncent un scherzo rythmique qui hésite entre mode mineur et mode majeur avec une intervention brillante des bois. Le quatrième et dernier mouvement, « un hymne au travail et aux joies saines de la vie quotidienne » (Carl Nielsen), s’ouvre sur un thème folklorique avec une dimension hymnique et se termine en une apothéose grandiose magnifiée par un contrepoint large et impassible. Rien ne laisse présager dans cette Symphonie n° 3 composée avant la guerre l’ambiance sombre et désespérée des symphonies suivantes de Carl Nielsen.

In Nature’s Realm, a concert overture by Antonín Dvořák, sounds like a landscape painting of the peaceful forests surrounding the Czech composer’s home village. The counterpoint at the end of this work is an ode to Johann Sebastian Bach.

Things get even more idyllic in Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. Obsessed with Finnish sagas, lakes and forests, Sibelius combines a late-Romantic style with modern Nordic sound aesthetics in this work. The melody with which the violin opens the concerto seems familiar, accompanied by gently pulsing strings. After a very romantic and incredibly lyrical second movement comes a frankly ecstatic final movement that demands a great deal of virtuosity from the soloist and was described by Sibelius as a ‘danse macabre’. German violinist Christian Tetzlaff, who made his mark at Bozar in June 2021 with a phenomenal interpretation of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, is the dream soloist for Sibelius’ most famous work.

Associate conductor Michael Schønwandt has been an ambassador of Danish composer Carl Nielsen for many years, with celebrated recordings of all his symphonies and all his concertos. In this concert with the Belgian National Orchestra, he performs the Third Symphony: the work with which Carl Nielsen made his national and international breakthrough in 1912. The second movement of this symphony, with wordless solos for soprano and baritone, depicts the peaceful, paradisiacal atmosphere of nature before the Fall. After this pastoral andante, the French horns announce a rhythmic scherzo oscillating between major and minor modes, with shining roles for the woodwinds. The fourth and final movement, “a hymn to work and to the healthy activity of daily life” (Carl Nielsen), starts with a folk-like hymn theme and reaches a grandiose climax with broadly extended counterpoint. The shadows and despair that characterise Carl Nielsen’s later symphonies are nowhere to be seen in the pre-war Third Symphony.
