In ancient myth, the musician Orpheus, grieving for his dead wife Eurydice and supported by Cupid, is not afraid to descend into the kingdom of shadows and, having begged for a gift from the gods and extortions of furies, takes Eurydice out of hell, struggling with the desire to look at his beloved. In 1762, the Viennese court composer Christoph Wilibald Gluck (1714-1787) uses this plot for an opera in Italian, where the part of Orpheus is intended for an alto castrato. And in 1774, Gluck made an extended French version of it, adding, according to the rules of the Parisian stage, more dances and transferring the main part to a high tenor.  

The remarkable opera is considered a pioneer for the Baroque era - since it subordinates music to the development of drama - and extremely difficult for singers. At the same time, there is little actual action in it, which is why it is often heard in concerts, with abbreviated ballet numbers. But in 2017, the outstanding contemporary choreographer John Neumeier staged it - not as an opera with ballet numbers and not as a ballet with opera inserts, but as a real synthesis of the two genres.
