One of the most monumental creations of Pyotr Tchaikovsky, the opera The Maid of Orleans, is a vivid artistic embodiment of an episode in the exciting history of France at the beginning of the 15th century. Against the background of the end of the Hundred Years War, the time of the "witch hunt", religious fanaticism and burning at the "holy" inquisitorial bonfires, the legendary life of the young Joanna d'Arc unfolded, who managed to inspire and lead the desperate French army, put to flight the garrisons of seemingly impregnable fortresses . But the sense of duty to the Motherland weakens under the onslaught of a flared love for the traitor knight. The sacred vow is broken - John spared the enemy. And only death will make it possible to get rid of the insurmountable contradiction: the sky will open, and the choir of angels will announce forgiveness. The play premiered in 2015. The director of the performance was one of the best young Russian directors, winner of the Golden Mask Prize, now the chief director of the Bashkir Opera and Ballet Theater Filipp Razenkov. actors and performers. Действие оперы разворачивается в начале XV века во Франции. В разгаре Столетняя война. Юная Иоанна д’Арк наперекор отцу отправляется защищать родную страну от иноземных захватчиков. В решающий момент битвы за Орлеан она ведёт за собой войско и освобождает город. Явившись ко двору, Иоанна предлагает королю Карлу VII свою помощь и становится во главе французской армии.

В одном из сражений воительница вступает в поединок с рыцарем-изменником, побеждает его, но не решается убить, — красота Лионеля поражает её в самое сердце. Рыцарь также покорен душевным благородством и красотой Иоанны, он раскаивается в предательстве.

В Реймсе по случаю победы проводятся торжества, на которые прибывает и Тибо, отец Иоанны. Он уверен, что его дочь вовсе не святая, а приспешница дьявола. Объятый религиозным фанатизмом, он «разоблачает» её: спрашивает, считает ли Иоанна себя святой и чистой. Орлеанской деве нечего ответить — ведь она думает, что погубила свою душу, полюбив простого смертного.

Вскоре девушка попадает в плен к англичанам. Лионель погибает, пытаясь её спасти. Иоанну обвиняют в ереси и приговаривают к сожжению. Орлеанской деве слышится хор ангелов — она прощена! И со словами: «Открылось небо, кончено страданье!» — она умирает.

The action of the opera takes place at the beginning of the 15th century in France. In the midst of the Hundred Years War. Young Joanna d'Arc, in defiance of her father, goes to defend her native country from foreign invaders. At the decisive moment of the battle for Orleans, she leads the army and liberates the city. Appearing at the court, John offers his help to King Charles VII and becomes the head of the French army.

In one of the battles, the warrior enters into a duel with  a traitor knight , defeats him, but does not dare to kill him - the beauty of Lionel strikes her to the very heart. The knight is also subdued by the spiritual nobility and beauty of Joanna, he repents of betrayal.

In Reims, on the occasion of the victory, celebrations are held, to which Thibaut, Joanna's father, also arrives. He is sure that his daughter is not a saint at all, but a minion of the devil. Embraced by religious fanaticism, he “exposes” her: he asks if John considers himself holy and pure. The Orleans maiden has nothing to answer - after all, she thinks that she has ruined her soul by falling in love with a mere mortal.

Soon the girl is captured by the British. Lionel dies trying to save her. John is accused of heresy and sentenced to be burned. The maiden of Orleans hears the choir of angels - she is forgiven! And with the words: “The sky has opened, suffering is over!” - she is dying.
