Dramatic, emotional Passion according to St. Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the greatest masterpieces of Baroque music. At the National Forum of Music, this unique work will be performed by the Wrocław Baroque Orchestra, Windsbacher Knabenchor and outstanding soloists. The concert will be conducted by the excellent conductor Ludwig Böhme.

Passion according to St. Jana was written during Johann Sebastian Bach's stay in Leipzig, when the composer was cantor at St. Thomas. It was written at the request of the city council of this city. The premiere took place during the vespers of Good Friday, April 7, 1724, in the Church of St. Santa. The two parts of the passion were then separated by a homily. The text of the work includes two chapters from the Gospel of St. John - from the arrest of Jesus to the laying of his body in the tomb after death on the cross. Interestingly, to this already emotional text, Bach also added several fragments from the Gospel of St. Matthew, including Peter's lament after denying Jesus, as well as the scene of tearing the veil in the Temple. The result is a work that is extremely dramatic, raw, poignant and engaging for the audience. The composer provided solo roles for the Evangelist, Peter, Jesus, and Pilate, and the Choir should be added to these heroes, not only commenting on the events, but also directly taking part in them. The dynamism is added by the fact that there are many dialogues and statements of the participants of the events in this work. Bach also does not hesitate to strongly emphasize any contrasts, which adds to the theatricality of the work. The mood of passion is introduced by the anxious plea of ​​the community - Herr, unser Herrscher sung by the choir. However, the emotional focal point is the dark alto aria that follows the death of JesusEs ist vollbracht , in which the solo voice is accompanied by a solo viola da gamba. The death of the Savior also means victory over sin, hence the middle section of the aria is a lively fragment accompanied by strings, after which the viola's lament returns. We can only imagine how much this direct, touching music made an impression on the audience gathered in a church in Leipzig in 1724. Yet even now, almost three hundred years later, Bach's masterpiece has lost none of its freshness and evocativeness in conveying the feelings of the story. It still moves and fascinates.

Dramatyczna, pełna emocji Pasja wg św. Jana Johanna Sebastiana Bacha należy do największych arcydzieł muzyki baroku.  W Narodowym Forum Muzyki to wyjątkowe dzieło zabrzmi w wykonaniu Wrocławskiej Orkiestry Barokowej, Windsbacher Knabenchor i wybitnych solistów. Koncert poprowadzi znakomity dyrygent Ludwig Böhme.

Pasja wg św. Jana powstała podczas pobytu Johanna Sebastiana Bacha w Lipsku, kiedy kompozytor pełnił rolę kantora przy Kościele św. Tomasza. Napisana została na zamówienie rady miejskiej tego miasta. Prawykonanie miało miejsce podczas nieszporów Wielkiego Piątku, 7 kwietnia 1724 roku, w Kościele św. Mikołaja. Dwie części pasji rozdzielone zostały wówczas homilią. Tekst dzieła obejmuje dwa rozdziały z Ewangelii św. Jana – od aresztowania Jezusa do złożenia Jego ciała do grobu po śmierci na krzyżu. Co ciekawe, do tego i tak już pełnego emocji tekstu Bach dołożył też kilka fragmentów z Ewangelii św. Mateusza, w tym lament Piotra po wyparciu się Jezusa, a także sceną rozdarcia zasłony w Świątyni. W rezultacie powstało dzieło niezwykle dramatyczne, surowe, przejmujące i angażujące dla odbiorców. Kompozytor przewidział role solowe dla Ewangelisty, Piotra, Jezusa, Piłata, a dodać do tych bohaterów należy także Chór, nie tylko komentujący wydarzenia, ale także bezpośrednio biorący w nich udział. Dynamizmu dodaje fakt, że w tym utworze znajduje się wiele dialogów i wypowiedzi uczestników wydarzeń. Bach także nie waha się silnie podkreślać wszelkich kontrastów, co dodaje dziełu teatralności. W nastrój pasji wprowadza pełne niepokoju błagalne zawołanie wspólnoty – Herr, unser Herrscher śpiewane przez chór. Jednak emocjonalnym punktem centralnym jest następująca po śmierci Jezusa utrzymana w ciemnych barwach aria altu Es ist vollbracht, w której głosowi solowemu towarzyszy grająca solo viola da gamba. Zgon Zbawiciela oznacza jednocześnie zwycięstwo nad grzechem, stąd środkowy odcinek arii to żywy fragment z towarzyszeniem smyczków, po którym powraca lament violi. Możemy sobie tylko wyobrażać, jak wielkie wrażenie zrobiła ta bezpośrednia, wzruszająca muzyka na publiczności zebranej w lipskim kościele w 1724 roku. Jednak nawet teraz, prawie trzysta lat później, arcydzieło Bacha nie straciło nic ze świeżości i sugestywności w przekazywaniu uczuć zawartych w opisywanej historii. Nadal porusza i fascynuje.
