Au Royaume imaginaire d’Allemonde, le Prince Golaud rencontre, au cours d’une chasse en forêt, la mystérieuse et diaphane Mélisande. L’ayant épousée sans rien savoir d’elle, il la présente à son demi-frère Pelléas. Tombés amoureux l’un de l’autre, les deux amants sont confondus par Golaud qui, au comble de la jalousie, tue Pelléas et laisse s’enfuir Mélisande. Elle meurt lentement de chagrin…

« Ces répétitions étonnées qui donnent aux personnages l’apparence de somnambules un peu sourds constamment arrachés à un songe
pénible… Ce manque de promptitude à entendre et à répondre tient intimement à leur psychologie et à l’idée un peu hagarde qu’ils se font de l’univers. »

En évoquant l’étrangeté de Pelléas et Mélisande, Antonin Artaud mettait en évidence la modernité du chef-d’œuvre de Claude Debussy, une œuvre unique dans l’histoire lyrique. La volonté du compositeur de renouveler l’opéra français parsème sa vie de nombreux essais et esquisses dont seul Pelléas trouvera un véritable aboutissement, devenant le seul opéra symboliste de l’histoire. Composant « un opéra après Wagner, et non pas d’après Wagner », le chant en est immatériel et l’orchestre insaisissable suscite, lors de la création à Paris en 1902, un parfum de scandale… Comme cela se produit généralement lors de l’apparition de nouvelles esthétiques. Maeterlinck, après avoir fulminé de déception et souhaité l’échec de l’œuvre, reviendra sur ses propos et saluera la justesse de la vision du musicien.

L’écriture musicale du rôle de Pelléas permet de le confier soit à un ténor, soit à un baryton, ce dernier choix ayant été opéré par le compositeur à la création de l’œuvre, et ce sera également le cas pour cette production.

In the imaginary Kingdom of Allemonde, Prince Golaud meets, during a hunt in the forest, the mysterious and diaphanous Mélisande. Having married her without knowing anything about her, he presents her to his half-brother Pelléas. Fallen in love with each other, the two lovers are confused by Golaud who, in the height of jealousy, kills Pelléas and lets Mélisande escape. She is slowly dying of grief...

"These astonished repetitions which give the characters the appearance of somewhat deaf somnambulists constantly torn from a
painful dream... This lack of promptness to hear and to respond is intimately linked to their psychology and to the somewhat haggard idea that they have of the universe. »

By evoking the strangeness of Pelléas et Mélisande , Antonin Artaud highlighted the modernity of Claude Debussy's masterpiece, a unique work in operatic history. The composer's desire to renew French opera sprinkled his life with numerous essays and sketches, of which only Pelléaswill find a real culmination, becoming the only symbolist opera in history. Composing "an opera after Wagner, and not after Wagner", the singing is immaterial and the elusive orchestra arouses, during the creation in Paris in 1902, a scent of scandal... As usually happens during the emergence of new aesthetics. Maeterlinck, after fulminating with disappointment and wishing the work failed, will return to his remarks and salute the accuracy of the musician's vision.

The musical writing of the role of Pelléas allows it to be assigned either to a tenor or a baritone, the latter choice having been made by the composer when creating the work, and this will also be the case for this production.
